Syrian sappers cleared a large minefield near the historical city of Palmyra in the eastern Homs countryside on February 1, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
“During our continues search for the terrorists’ remnants in the desert of Palmyra we found a field planted with all sorts of mines, including anti-tanks mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and remotely-controlled IEDs,” a military source told the state-run agency.
According to the source, the minefield was 3km long and 800m wide. Some of the mines, which had been removed or detonated by the Syrian sappers, are prohibited by international law.
The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) liberated Palmyra from ISIS for the second time in March of 2017. After the battle, Russian sappers were deployed to clear the city and its historical remains from ISIS’ remnants.
Later, Russian sappers opened a demining school near the city of Homs. Hundreds of SAA soldiers and officers received extensive training on advanced demining techniques there.
