Syrian security forces foiled on July 17 an attempt to smuggle several improvised-explosives devices (IEDs) to the coastal area of Jableh, where a Russian military base is located.

Pro-government sources said that security forces seized the IEDs, which were hidden inside olive oil canisters, on a checkpoint south of Jableh’s city center. Initial information indicates that the Turkish-occupied areas in northern Aleppo were the source of the shipment.

One of the photos reveal that the IEDs were equipped with a remotely-controlled detonator. These explosive devices were likely meant to be used in assassinations or sabotage operations.

Jableh is hosting Hmeimim airbase, the biggest Russian military object in Syria. The area, in which the IED shipment was busted, is located only few kilometers away from the Russian base.

Few years ago, a counter-intelligence operation by the Syrian authorities uncovered a spy ring of the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) that was planning to attack Hmeimim airbase. The MIT is responsible for most security-linked developments in the Turkish-occupied areas in northern Aleppo.
