Syrian Security Forces Uncover ISIS Weapons Cache With Anti-Tank Rockets In Daraa (Photos)

Syrian security forces have uncovered a large weapons cache of ISIS near the town of al- Yadudah in the western Daraa countryside, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported on December 29.

A security official told the state-run news agency that the cache was uncovered with help from locals in al-Yadudah. According to the unnamed official, ISIS cells planned to use the weapons to carry out terrorist attacks.

The cache included loads of different weapons and ammunition, most notable a Soviet-made RPG-29 anti-tank rocket-propelled grenade launcher and a number of Czechoslovakian-made RPG-75 single-shot anti-tank rocket-propelled grenades.

In the last few months, the Syrian military, intelligence, security forces and local fighters intensified their efforts to uproot ISIS from Daraa.

A series of counter-terrorism operations were carried out in different parts of the governorate. The most notable operation took place in the town of Jasim in mid-October. ISIS top leader Abu al-Hasan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi was killed along with other senior commander of the terrorist group in the operation.

On December 25, ISIS lost one of its senior security commander in Daraa, Abu Louay al-Qalamouni, when he was accidentally intercepted by local fighters near the town of Tal Shihab in the western Daraa countryside. The commander was fatally wounded in the unplanned encounter.

Work against ISIS in Daraa is still gaining momentum. Nevertheless, the terrorist group large presence there will not likely end soon.
