Syrian security forces uncovered a large ISIS base in the outskirt of the city of al-Mayadin in the southern Deir Ezzor countryside during a recent search operation, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on February 8.
According to the state-run news agency, the base contained several mass graves of civilians who had been executed by the terrorist group more than two years ago. Locals from al-Mayadin helped to reveal the graves.
“The base also includes a large training camp of ISIS terrorists, a tunnel network that links the hills around al-Mayadin, and a munitions workshop,” Deir Ezzor police chief Brig. Nizar Hassan told the SANA.
Dozens of improvised rocket-assisted munition (IRAMs) and a destroyed T-72 battle tank were found inside the abandoned base.
The Syrian Arab Army (SAA), backed by the Russian Aerospace Forces, liberated al-Mayadin from ISIS in October of 2017. Since then, thousands of civilians have returned to the city, which is witnessing a state of calmness.
I wonder if the SAA and SDF have tried using or are using dogs to sniff the dirt beams that ISIS had made? Have read several times where ISIS had hidden caches of cash, ammo and drugs in those using GPS coordinates in order for sleeper cells to find them later.
In Al Hasakah and Ar Raqqah there are dozens of tanks and even more heavy artillery stashed away, not much of what Isis first confiscated from the SAA has been destroyed or returned yet, it has to be out there somewhere.
