On December 5, unidentified gunmen killed a soldier and wounded an officer of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) 52nd Brigade in the eastern countryside of Daraa.
The gunmen reportedly opened fire from their assault rifles at two service member, who were riding a motorcycle, as they were passing on a road between the towns of al-Hrak and Mlaiha al-Gharbiyah. The gunmen managed to flee the scene of the attack before being caught.
Following the attack, the Air Force Intelligence Directorate prevented anyone in al-Hrak, Mlaidah al-Gharbiya and the nearby town of al-Sourah from moving on motorcycles as a protective measure.
In the last few weeks, several attacks took place in the eastern and northeastern countryside of Daraa. ISIS cells are known to be present in these regions.
Just a day earlier, a patrol of the Russian Military Police was targeted with an improvise explosive device as it was passing on a road near the town of Izraa in the northeastern countryside of Daraa. No casualties or material losses were reported as a result of the attack.
The Syrian military, intelligence and security forces have been counducting operations in the eastern and northeastern countryside of Daraa in an attempt to secure these regions. However, more need to be done apparently.
