At least eleven militants of the Turkish-backed Suqour al-Sham Brigades were killed on August 1 when pro-government fighters raided their position in southeastern Idlib.
Opposition sources said that pro-government fighters raided the militants’ position, located in the town of Ejaz, under the cover of darkness. The attackers reportedly used silenced weapons to kill everyone that was inside the position before withdrawing to the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) positions near Abu Duhur airbase.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the raid was carried out by pro-government tribesmen from southeastern Idlib. However, the Military Media said that SAA’s Special Forces were behind it.
Suqour al-Sham Brigades, formerly a unit in the Ahrar al-Sham Movement, joined the National Front for Liberation (NFL) last year. The Turkish-backed coalition is currently supporting Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other al-Qaeda-affiliated groups in northern Hama.
Ejaz’s raid is a sign of a major shift in SAA’s tactics around Greater Idlib. The upcoming few days may witness more similar hit and run attacks.
