On June 9, a senior commander of the Turkish-backed National Front for Liberation (NFL) was killed and four of his militants were wounded when the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) artillery stuck a position they were manning in the outskirts of the town of Kansafra in the southern part of the Greater Idlib region.
Kansafra was shelled by the SAA along with the nearby towns of Falafel, al-Bara and Fatterah. The four towns are a part of the al-Zawiya mountain.
The slain commander was identified as Wissam Ismael, who is also known by his nom de guerre “Abu Nawaf”. Ismael was the commander of special forces in the NFL’s 2nd Army.

The NFL is Turkey’s main proxy in Greater Idlib and the second largest faction in the region after al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Despite having several differences, the NFL and HTS coordinate on a high level against the SAA.
The SAA artillery strikes were likely a response to recent violations of the ceasefire in Greater Idlib. The Russian Reconciliation Center, which is tasked with monitoring the ceasefire, reported 12 indirect fire attacks by HTS and other factions in the region in the last few days.
The ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than two years ago, could collapse soon. According to recent reports, the NFL and HTS are preparing to launch a large-scale attack on the SAA and its allies in the western Aleppo countryside with indirect support from Turkey. The attack would distract the army from any Turkish operation against Kurdish forces in the northern countryside of Aleppo.
