Government forces have eliminated more than 270 ISIS members as well as seized a large amount of weapons and munition, including 12 TOW anti-tank guided missiles, in the province of al-Suwayda since middle November, Oleg Makarevich, a spokesman for the command of the Russian task force in Syria, announced on December 3.
“The terrorists had been there for a long time, flocking to the area for several months. Among them were militants who were able to leave Yarmouk and Damascus in advance and also arrived from al-Tanf. Another difficulty was that tanks and heavy artillery have very limited maneuverability there, while the militants had many grenade launchers, anti-tank missiles and 82mm mortars,” the spokesman stated.
380km2 in eastern al-Suwayda was declared fully liberated from ISIS by the Syrian state media on November 17. Despite this, according to local sources, some number of ISIS cells still hide in the desert area south of al-Safa. Furthermore, a large presence of ISIS can observed in the Homs-Deir Ezzor desert. Therefore, claims of some pro-government sources that the terrorist group was fully eliminated on the western bank of the Euphrates are premature.
The US-controlled zone of al-Tanf is being actively used by ISIS terrorists as a safe haven to hide from Syrian Army attacks and to re-locate its forces in eastern Syria. While it exists, it’s not likely that ISIS cells could be fully wiped out in this part of the country.
From its side, the US-led coalition is contributing every possible effort to prevent any security operations of the Syrian Army near the al-Tanf zone. On December 2, the coalition shelled Syrian Army positions near the al-Ghurab mount at the border with Iraq. The US-led force reportedly employed M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) deployed at the al-Tanaf base.
The formal reason of the attack is unknown but US forces had repeatedly attacked Syrian Army units pursuing terrorists in the area on the edge of the so-called security zone near al-Tanf.
On December 3, the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) released a statement claiming that 11 Turkish-backed militants had been killed by the group in two fresh attacks in the Syrian area of Afrin.
On December 2, a YPG unit attacked a Jaysh al-Islam patrol in the village of Dermishmishe, near Afrin city. 5 Jaysh al-Islam members were reportedly killed and 3 others were wounded in the attack. Their vehicle was also destroyed.
On the same day, YPG fighters destroyed a military vehicle stationed at the headquarters of Ahrar al-Sham in the town of Jinderese. 6 Turkish-backed militants were killed and 8 others were wounded, according to the YPG report.
YPG attacks in Afrin will likely continue until the Turkish military and its proxies establish an effective security network in this part of Turkish-occupied Syria. However, a widely known incompetence and corruption within Turkish-backed militant groups delay and in some case even sabotage these Ankara-led efforts.

Exact repeat of propaganda article from yesterday. We all know ISIS works for Russia-Syria-Iran coalition and Erdogan. They let al Safa ISIS go after having them surrounded for almost a year. Now they claim to be fighting ISIS. What a joke.
Worse yet first they supplied al Safa ISIS with at least 4 truckloads of money, drugs, ammunition and arms. Then they refused to fight al Safa ISIS for a week claiming the weather was too bad. After letting al Safa ISIS go now they claim to be fighting ISIS. Where are the dead and wounded ISIS fighters? Where are the captives?
There is a huge ISIS base in SW Euphrates that controls 10% of what is left of Syria, yet Russia coalition will never even go there much less fight them. I suspect ISIS is already heading back to al Safa, that is if they ever left in the first place.

If you draw a straight line from that exclusion zone at Al Tanf to any of the places Isis exists in southern Syria or has been fighting during the last 12 months you’ll find out the max distance from the exclusion zone is 150 km or less. Not Al TANF itself, the 55 KM exclusion zone around it. 150 to Abu Kamal where they attack very often 150 to As Suwayda where they kidnapped the Druze and were also fighting 150 to where they are now on the map 100 to where they were just defeated on the volcano 80 to Palmyra, where they were attacking all along the highway nearby for quite a while, and also tried to infiltrate the town for the second time. Traveling at 30 KMPH you can get from the exclusion zone at Al Tanf to anywhere Isis has been, and is operating right now, in just 5 hours, if you could travel faster than 30 KM it would probably be much less. If they used a secondary operating and supply bases/depots [I’m sure they would], it would be even closer than the 150 KM , perhaps only 100 KM or less away from Al Tanf, a 3.5 hour drive at 30 KMPH. Is this sort of logistical supply line possible, driving at night on rough desert and mountain tracks, desert sand in lots of places too, and all while the enemy’s looking for you. Since they know these areas like the back of their hands now, I would think they probably could, especially with some helpful intel supplied by sympathetic locals to help them avoid the SAA. Using motorbikes [as we often see them do], would make smaller supply trips[medical, box of ammo] even faster and easier, not to mention how useful they’d be in fleeing from the SAA if they had to after a defeat, 150 KM from wherever they are to Al Tanf doesn’t sound like a lot to me or too difficult, but I live in the Australian outback, so long distances and rough terrain don’t mean that much to me, even at night. I wonder what military logistical personnel would think if I said to them [If I was the commander], make it possible, I want supply routes set up between depots we can hide in and around the exclusion zone, and then set up intermediary bases halfway between the places we’re about to attack 150 KM away from our main base at Al Tanf. Would they shake their heads at me and groan, or snap to attention and get it done easily. somebody experienced in logistics would know but I don’t, but in my opinion, I think they could. It seems to be happening from the way I see it anyway, Al Tanf is like the central location that Isis always seems to spread out from, cut off one head and another one grows back somewhere else close by. The US backed rebels at the US base steal food from the refugees and give it to Isis, they also give their US supplied weapons to them as well. I can only see the US base at Al Tanf being the logistical hub that keeps Isis alive in southern Syria, that’s the only thing that explains Isis’s continued presence in the area they operate in, always within 150 KM of the exclusion zone. Maybe I’m seeing coincidences and nothing more, but explaining Isis’s presence without the exclusion zone being the most important factor is totally impossible for me, the US enforced exclusion zone is the reason Isis still exists in southern Syria.

But Al Tanf BLOCK for that – or as You say, its difficult to block. But ISIS has had to go around at least the defined 55 km zone even having guards(mainky semi-FSA).
But none can effort any shoulder by shoulder cover. Even landmines and barbed wire can not stop much. Anybosy else can se, that crossers right away will make tunnels and often are very good at it.
ISIS has not been supported by USA for years. USA has after that stopped Saudis giving them RPGs and up as well as Turks as the last one did.
So it almost only the opposite. There has been no support to ISIS fx to the Vukcano or Palmyra. USA has tryed to BLOCK against ISIS, which has (by acident) had helped Damaskus.
And FSA there is a fiasco as big force. For a period I would say, they max had 1000 there in 2-3 groups, which now almost are eliminated. You see one active and good small group – maybee 100 – 75 – 150 (my private opiinion).
And controlling the borderline only there as You propose make no sense. ISIS after the Iraqians came from Ramadi and took Al Qaim close to Abu Kamal, systematicly has crossed anywhere they wished at the 300 km border from Al Tanf to Al Qaim( Al Qaim).
Thats 300 km extra having(had) very good roads and even once upon a time ago railroad transportation for mineral (almost only phosphate) for making phosfate at Al Qaim and good transportaion to users.
So from Iraq its same thing, where strongpoints like Ar Rutba(in the old days Rutba wells) is much more realistic “taxing and delaying” ISIS.
Iraq and Syria do have some loose cover at the 300 km and maybe are building fences and walls as well, but its helpers no closing solution. But thats progress. Even so we do see ISIS attacks at the Syrian side stil having a big contested area as well as sounterattacks along Eufrat from DEZ to rhe Iraqian border as well as in the AlQaim area.
To me its a military waste to put out several 1000 troops out there having those long suplly lines which You describe well. You can find water here and there, but thats it.
So unless Damaskus has too many soldiers, let USA have that part of almost empty desert and semi desert grass land.
Al Tanf today is almost only a political thing, now ISIS is reduced that much, as well as FSA is no succes there.
That road today only could have importance for Iranian missile transport. Many will not allow that to happen at all. We see, what small Israel do. Do You really want that level to soldiers in stead of missile systems and housing them.
Securing the rest of the Assad posserion is much more important as well as Turks, FSA, Nusra all the way to Jarablus.
