In the morning of March 7, three L-39 warplanes of the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) conducted a series of airstrikes on the town of Saraqib in the southeastern Idlib countryside, according to Syrian opposition activists.
The Aero L-39 Albatros is a Czechoslovakian high-performance jet trainer with offensive capabilities. The SyAAF has been using this type of warplanes in close air support and ground attack missions, since 2012.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the airstrikes targeted several positions, hideouts and ammo depots of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the former branch of al-Qaeda in Syria.
“The army’s airstrikes destroyed many hideouts, killed many terrorists, injured others and destroyed their weapons and equipment,” the SANA’s reporter said.
A day earlier, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) destroyed a headquarters of Jaysh al-Izza in southern Idlib killing more than 7 fighters of the group. Later, the army shelled several positions of the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) in northwestern Idlib for the first time in months.
These new attacks by the SAA are likely aimed at deterring militant groups, who continue to violate the Russian-Turkish demilitarized zone agreement.

The L-39 is a light Czech training aircraft and not very effective in COIN or ground attack and is vulnerable to AAA and MANPADS. It payload very light max 600 kgs and basically 50mm unguided rockets on two under wing hardpoints. Syria needs to get its SU-24 Fencers and SU-22 Fitters in action. Perhaps, the Iranians who operate the same aircraft can overhaul them, as they have done with the 20 ex-Iraqi SU-22. Russia is too busy kissing Turkeys arse after its own dishwasher SU-24 was downed by Turkeys in F-16.

Wow…I didn’t know that would happen. Are you sure? I went to Breitbart just for laughs and to aggravate the neocons. I left a post questioning their BS and my comment went into ‘pending’ limbo. That was months ago, it’s still ‘pending’. They don’t like posts that are not in step with their myopic view of reality or storyline. AMN is ruining their comment section, as every post has to be ‘moderated'(at least all mine are). Sometimes comments sit for over a week before they are approved and actually posted. Don’t bother asking why, you’ll get no answer. I’ve also had comments here on SF ‘detected as spam'(BS), I think certain posters flagged me as revenge. They say this is being rectified. Apparently that process takes months as well. One post has sat in limbo (“working on getting this corrected”) for 12 days and another 2 months. Why bother? The conversation is stale by now and will not be viewed at all.

Even without the benefit of a nose job, that is a accurate statement. Most of Syria’s airforce has been grounded as it suffered great attrition and losses thanks to your headchoppers. Another weakness in Arab airforces is their inability to maintain equipment in top battlefield conditions. They just let new systems deteriorate and leave them out in the open, where weather elements take their toll. Since 1974, when the Pakistanis left, the Syrian Arab Airforce has not been able to operate above 40% operational status. In Iranian, Turkish and Pakistani airforces combat readiness is above 80% on any given day and that is a lot of sortie capacity as the PAF amply demonstrated last week.
