Warplanes of the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) have carried out a series of airstrikes on the outskirt of a Turkish “observation post” in the southern Idlib countryside, the Step News Agency reported on February 20.
According to the pro-opposition news agency, the targeted post is located near Qaminas. The town is only 3 km to the northwest of al-Nayrab, which is now being attacked by Turkish-backed forces.
“Initial reports indicate that personnel of the Turkish military were injured,” the agency said in a short press release.
Oppositions sources shared a video showing one of the Syrian airstrikes which targeted the Turkish “observation post” near Qaminas.
The airstrikes were most likely a response to the ongoing Turkish-backed attack. Militants of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the National Front for Liberation (NFL) are leading the ground offensive, while the Turkish artillery is providing fire support.
Heavy clashes are still taking place around al-Nayrab. Pro-government sources are claiming that most of the attackers have been neutralized by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA). However, this is yet to be confirmed.

Syrians should annihilate all turkish ‘observation posts’ now, just hit them with everything you have. Turkey openly sided with terrorists, they don’t even hide their aggression any more. So, there is no reason to tolerate enemy positions, they are legitimate (and logical) targets.
It may become inevitable. What’s to stop the Turkish forces breaking out en masse from these observation posts, rendezvousing with the newly arrived artillery and attacking the SAA whilst terrorists simultaneously mount another wave of suicide bombers? It could be enough to break some SAA lines.
Its possible that breakouts may be attempted. It would take a standard of competence and planning though that has not been exhibited by the Turkish forces in all of its questionable operations in Syria thus far.
I’m not sure whether i can agree with you Florian. Turkey is a nato member and will by now know everything that nato knows. They will also process more-or-less the same equipment. The US has already offered help and if Erdogan goes down that route, Turkish forces won’t be in control for long.

SAA may want to ensure that any forces leaving these posts go straight back to Turkey via a predefined road. But in any case, I predict Turkey will have to vacate the posts now that they realise they’re just providing leverage to the SAA.

I hope Syria does fully regain control of Idlib and that an understanding for peace with those groups that were bussed there under agreement. I was horrified to see a BBC report this morning about the flooding in a rural area.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:50 P.M.) – Turkey has reportedly asked the United States, a NATO ally, to deploy two Patriot missile systems along its southern border with Syria, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday. Citing a Turkish official in Ankara, Bloomberg said the purpose of the Patriot missile systems would be to deter the Russian military’s strikes inside the Idlib Governorate, where as many as a dozen Turkish soldiers were killed in the past two weeks.
According to Bloomberg, the request was made by Turkey to the U.S. envoy to Syria, James Jeffrey, last week; however, they have yet to receive an answer from Washington. If the Patriot system was deployed in the Hatay Province, Turkey could deploys its fighter jets to Syria in order to deter the Syrian and Russian air forces, the Bloomberg report said. On Thursday, the Turkish-backed militants, with support from the Turkish military, launched a counter-offensive to retake the town of Nayrab in eastern Idlib. As of now, intense clashes are still ongoing at the western outskirts of Nayrab, with early reports claiming that the militants have been repelled by the Syrian Arab Army.
