AlMasdarNews reported: On Monday morning, the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched a large-scale offensive around the Deir Ezzor Governorate to seize several Syrian Arab Army (SAA) strongholds before the latter lifts the siege on this desert province in eastern Syria.

The terrorist group began the offensive by launching 4 VBIEDs (vehicle borne improvised explosive device) at the southern gates of the Deir Ezzor Military Airport; however, these suicide attacks were repelled before they could reach their intended targets.

Following the failed suicide attacks, the terrorist group stormed the Deir Ezzor Military Airport, the nearby village of Al-Jafra, and the western perimeter of the provincial capital, where they attempted to break-through the Syrian Arab Army’s front-line defenses.

The only area where ISIS was able to achieve any-kind of success was the village of Al-Jafra; but, this was only temporary because the Syrian Arab Army’s 137th Artillery Brigade of the 17th Reserve Division was able to reclaim all of their lost territory. According to a military source in Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Armed Forces killed upwards around 40 ISIS terrorists during the latter’s failed offensive on Monday, including several foreigners from Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Libya, and Malaysia. The source also added that the terrorist group fired mustard gas at the Syrian Arab Army soldiers inside the Deir Ezzor Airport in their latest attempt to enter the gates.
