On August 10, the Taliban claimed control over the city of Farah, the capital of the province of the same name located in western Afghanistan.
Farah is located on the Farah River, close to the border with Iran and is one of the largest cities of western Afghanistan with the population of 54,000.
“The Mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate also captured the center of Farah during Operation Conquest. The governor’s office and all its attachments in the memorial center were cleansed of the enemy and came under the control of Mujahidin. The pursuit of the remaining enemy is underway, and the enemy will soon be driven out of other areas”. – the Taliban’s claim reads.
The claim was proved with the photo showing Taliban members at governor’s headquarters in the center of the city. Police headquarters in Farah city also fell to the Taliban.

The city was attacked last night. In several hours, Taliban militants reached the city center.

As usual, the Taliban militants captured more Humvees and weapons in the city and took control of the local prison. Prisoners were released.

Meanwhile, the Afghan Air Force intensifies air strikes on Taliban hideouts in various Afghan provinces, to no significant avail so far.

Farah became the 7th provincial capital to fall under Taliban’s control. In recent days the following cities were captured:

- Sheberghan in northern Jawzjan province,
- Kunduz in north-eastern Kunduz province,
- Sar-e-Pol in northern Sar-e-Pol province,
- Taloqan, the capital of Takhar province,
- Aibak, the capital of Samangan province.

Air support will not save the Afghan Army and government. The helicopters and A-29 (Embraer EMB-214) aircraft lack the heavy payload needed to stop the Taliban advances. If the Afghan Air Force had types like the A-1 Skyraider, or Su-25, that might make a difference. Another big factor is motivation and resolve.
The civil war hasn’t started and all parts in Afghanistan besides the Pakistani Taliban looking for a peace deal. Russia not buying/believing extremist Sunnis that they’re killing around the world. Iran will never let any extremist Sunni group control a border near them; “In this context, we are ready and willing to pursue the Tehran Peace Initiative to form an inclusive government in a genuine intra-Afghan dialogue, including all the groups that exist in Afghanistan today.”
The Northern Alliance said it again, they are not looking for civil war but if the Pakistani Taliban does not hold for peace they start hanging Taliban.
The US is surprised by the Taliban advances. I think they knew the Taliban were getting to this point and their forces were at risk of being overrun or at minimum dragged into a massive conflict they couldn’t win which would have been a major embarrassment . They decided too leave and wash their hands of it and prepare for their next involvement in the knowledge they didn’t lose , the Afghanis despite all their help failed and lost.. That is why America is exceptional. They don’t lose and not responsible for anything as they are the good guys.
The US created disasters in Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq (twice), Syria and their support for the death, misery and destruction in Yemen should be a brutal lesson for any country that puts its trust in US assistance.
