Taliban Resumes Its Operations In Farah Province, Captures New Positions

Taliban fighters during “Operation al-Khandagh”

On June 10, Taliban fighters launched a new attack in the western province of Farah and captured three checkpoints of the Afghan National Army (ANA) and the Afghan National Police (ANP) in the district of Pur Chaman, according to the Taliban news agency Voice of Jihad.

The Taliban claimed that its fighters killed twelve personnel of the ANA and the ANP and injured three others during the attack in Pur Chaman. Taliban fighters also captured several machine guns and an RPG-7 launcher.

The Voice of Jihad also reported that warplanes of the NATO and the Afghan Air Force (AAF) destroyed five civilian houses in the areas of Tadank, Meyan Jawi and Warie in the district of Rod in Farah. Reportedly, no civilians were killed or injured in the airstrikes.

Last month, the Taliban stormed the city of Farah, the capital of Farah province, and managed to capture several key positions inside it. However, the ANA and ANP were able to repel the attack on May 16 thanks to a direct support from the NATO.

The new attack of the Taliban indicates that the Afghan group is still determined to expand its control in Farah at all costs. Observers believe that Taliban fighters may launch a new large scale attack on the city of Farah after the Eid al-Fitr ceasefire ends.
