The United States confirmed that its forces had recently carried out air strikes on Taliban in Afghanistan, as U.S.-led foreign forces are on the final stages of their withdrawal from the country.
On July 22, Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby told reporters that the air strikes were carried out in support of Afghan security forces (ANDSF) without providing any details.
“Without speaking to specifics, …, I can say that in the last several days, we have acted through airstrikes to support the ANDSF but I won’t get into tactical details of those strikes.”- the report reads.
Later, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that the strikes were carried out on July 21 night on the outskirts of the southern city of Kandahar, killing three of their fighters and destroying two vehicles.
“We confirm these air strikes and we condemn this in strongest term, it is a clear attack and violation of the Doha deal as they can’t have operations after May,” he said.
Mujahid added that if the U.S. forces continue any operation then they would be responsible for the consequences.
These are the first U.S. air strikes since Gen. Scott Miller, the former commander of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, handed his authority to Gen. Frank McKenzie. They may be a sign that U.S. military is not going to stop its strikes on Taliban militants at least until August 31st. Taking into account Washington’s attempts to find a host for its troops in neighboring to Afghanistan countries, U.S. airstrikes may threaten Taliban even after the U.S. withdrawal finished.
