Trilateral talks between President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres began in Lviv.
On August 17, UN Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Lviv. The UN secretary general arrived in the Ukrainian city to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Erdogan. The meeting with the presidents is scheduled for August 18.
The main purpose of Guterres’ visit is to discuss the latest developments at nuclear power plants in Ukraine, especially the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and the resumption of agreements on exports of raw materials from Ukraine. The leaders will also talk about relations between Ukraine and Turkey.
The UN claimed the necessity of the visit of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors to Zaporizhzhya. They could reach the plant from Kyiv, but Russia insists that any mission that would go through the Ukrainian capital is too dangerous. According to the Russian side, Kyiv deliberately shelled the power plants to draw international attention to them so that the plants would not fall into Russia’s hands.
Once again, the Turkish side is trying to mediate the conflict.
On August 19, Guterres will visit Odessa, where the grain exports, mediated by the UN, Russia, Ukraine and Turkey have recently resumed.
The UN secretary general’s next stop will be Istanbul where he will visit the Joint Coordination Centre. There, more applied issues will be discussed. Ukrainian and Turkish leaders will discuss the export of Ukrainian grain and fertilizers across the Black Sea.

Guterres is one of the more helpful, neutral and impartial figures in the UN from what I’ve seen so far, try reading about his background, the G7 said Russia should hand back the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to Ukraine, but Guterres is arranging a more sensible approach involving inspections. It was also him that brokered the end of the Azovstal siege among other things. Although there are many hostile countries holding powerful positions in the UN I think there could be considerably worse options.
