The villages of Jibeen and Tell Meleh in the northern Hama countryside fell into the hands of terrorist groups in the late hours of June 6.
Earlier, a coalition of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), Turkish-backed factions and al-Qaeda-affiliated groups launched a large-scale attack on the two villages. The attack was named after Mu’tasim Bellah al-Madani, a prominent Saudi figure of al-Qaeda, who was recently killed by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).
Pro-government sources confirmed that the SAA withdrew from both villages following intense shelling by HTS and its allies. The sources claimed that the army is working to repel the attack.
HTS and its allies are reportedly planning to capture the strategic town of Mahardah, which is located 6km southeast of Tell Meleh. The terrorists shelled the town several times in the last few hours, likely to terrorize or even displace civilians living there
The upcoming few hours will not likely witness any additional advances by HTS and its allies, as Syrian and Russian warplanes are currently carrying out intense airstrikes on their positions.

I know everyone feels this is a strategy the SAA now uses to lure the rebels in and kill them, but I’m old fashioned and don’t agree it’s good tactics, that’s if that’s what the SAA are really doing, and I have my doubts it’s purposeful at all. Losing a town and having the civilian population flee is bad for morale, often detrimentally affects logistics, and possibly even battle tactics if the town is in an ideal location [high point, junction, resource abundant], so I don’t know if sacrificing a town is really worth it, not just to kill a few hundred rebels and their vehicles. The rebels have the OB posts to hide behind and flee to if the need to, that’s the tactic the rebels use, that’s the advantage they have over the SAA, and no one bombs near the OB posts.
SAA/russia should set up something like the turkish observation posts whenever they take back towns/land, to further deter rats from attacking
OB post won’t deter them, they only deter people trying to do the right thing and abiding by the law, the rebels slit 10 year old boys throats and eat dead SAA soldiers livers, they’re not really very law abiding so I don’t think they’d work too well at deterring the rebels. I think eradication is the only way to take back more towns, wipe out their numbers and resources so they can’t hold the towns in the first place. It’s a war of attrition now, less numbers mean less territory they can old, if the SAA and Russia kill more terrorists, their territory will shrink accordingly, no need for large scale ground offenses, just wipe them out from the air and mop up what’s left. Humanitarian concerns are largely unfounded too, in nearly all the towns taken back by the SAA in these recent gains, most if not all the civilian populations had left long ago, reports I’ve read say most of the civilians had left in may last year.
