Terrorists in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib are attempting to infiltrate government-held areas in the governorates of Aleppo and Lattakia, Rear Admiral Vadim Kulit, deputy chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Parties in Syria, said on August 8.
“Reports are coming in that sabotage and reconnaissance groups of terrorists are trying to cross the engagement line from the Idlib de-escalation zone in the Aleppo and Latakia provinces,” the commander said.
Kulit added that the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the Russian military group in the country were taking measures to eliminate the terrorist threat.
The Turkish military maintains a fairly large presence in Greater Idlib. However, the region is ruled by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and several other terrorist groups who violate a ceasefire brokered by Turkey and Russian some three years ago on a regular basis.
Last week, two officers and two soldiers were killed when terrorists infiltrated a key position of the SAA on Mount Nabi Yunis in the northern Lattakia countryside. Initially it was reported that the infiltration was carried out by Turkistan terrorists. However, HTS later claimed responsibility for the attack.
The SAA and the Russian military always respond to ceasefire violations by HTS and its allies. However, the Turkish military does nothing to reinforce the ceasefire.
The recent escalation in the region appears to be an attempt to sabotage the Turkish-Syrian normalization process which is sponsored by both Russia and Iran.
