The Thai military has targeted Cambodia using a little-known, locally-made, fixed-wing suicide drone dubbed KB.
Video footage showing a strike with a KB drone on post of the Cambodian military along the disputed border surfaced online on July 25, just a day after the clashes broke out between the two countries over recent mine blasts that wounded a number of Thai troops.
The KB was designed by the Navaminda Kasatriyadhiraj Royal Thai Air Force Academy. It was unveiled for the first time at the Dronetech Asia 2024 unmanned aerial vehicle exhibition in the city of Bangkok.
Two versions of the drone were showcased at the exhibition: the KB-5E which is propelled by an electric engine, and the slightly larger KB-10G that is propelled by a piston engine. Both versions feature a near identical delta-wing shape and can be launched with a catapult or a rocket booster.
The KB-5E has a range of 150 kilometers and carries a warhead weighing 5 kg, while the KB-10G has a range of 500 kilometers and carries a 40-kg warhead. Both versions are designed to engage static targets only, and for that they are equipped with a GPS-aided inertial navigation system. Both are reported to be capable of a circular error probable (CEP) of less than 3 meters.
Reports suggest that both versions of the KB were in production. Photos showing tests of the KB-5E were even released by the Royal Thai Air Force earlier this month.
The specifications of KB drones are, without a doubt, on par with others produced by more prominent players in the international drone market. However, it is unclear yet how well these drones have been performing in the current conflict with Cambodia.
