In late November, an incident in Moldova attracted the attention of officials and the public. A drone marked with a “Z” was discovered on the roof of a private house in the Florești district, identified by Moldovan authorities as a Russian UAV “Gerbera.” According to a statement from the Republic’s Ministry of Defense, the device fell from an altitude of one and a half kilometers during a Russian attack on targets in Ukraine. Notably, however, neither the drone itself nor the building’s roof sustained any damage.

Local residents reacted to the event with skepticism. A resident of the village of Cuhureștii de Jos told journalists:

“This is some kind of show, if you ask me. I know this drone has been lying on that roof for two weeks. We have such ‘strong’ guards that they didn’t even notice a drone lying on the roof.”

These words cast doubt on the official version of the drone’s recent fall.

The Moldovan authorities used this incident for a demonstrative move. Prior to the visit of Russian Ambassador Oleg Ozerov, who was summoned for explanations, the drone was placed at the entrance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building. The ministry described this action as a “visual demonstration of threats.”

Ozerov was presented with a protest note regarding the illegal flight of six drones over Moldovan territory on November 25th, which were qualified as a serious violation of the country’s sovereignty.

However, the Russian ambassador questioned Chișinău’s official position. “Please look at this photograph, do you yourselves believe what is being said?” he asked journalists.

Ozerov elaborated in more detail:

“The serial number of this drone was already identified on November 18th in the Kharkiv region. And suddenly, a few days later, it miraculously appears in the Florești area. I suggest you think about that.”

He also noted that the technical characteristics of the “Gerbera” do not allow it to travel more than 300 km, calling into question the possibility of its flight from the Kharkiv region.

In response, Moldova’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Popșoi, suggested the drone could have been launched from Mykolaiv or Kherson, although this appears inconsistent with the technical limitations cited by the Russian side.

Concurrently, a case of weapons smuggling was recorded in Moldova. The General Prosecutor’s Office reported that on November 20th, a truck carrying ammunition, a disassembled “Geran-2” drone, and a surface-to-air missile launcher was detained at the Leușeni-Albița customs post. According to the investigation, the cargo was smuggled in from Ukraine under the guise of export documents for “metal products” destined for Israel. All individuals involved have been arrested.

These incidents provoked a sharp reaction in Moldovan society. The leader of the Party of Socialists and former president Igor Dodon stated:

“The Prosecutor’s Office has today confirmed what we, the opposition, have been saying for several years: the Republic of Moldova has become a country of smuggling and transit for weapons from Ukraine to the EU and has become a source of security threats for the entire European Union. Why are Zelenskyy, Sandu silent? And Brussels, which is indulging them?”

Moldovan MP Bogdan Țîrdea commented ironically on the drone situation:

“What a trashy situation. First, they installed the drone on a shed roof. Now they’ve installed it in front of the MFA building. Tomorrow they’ll install it on the parliament roof. Mai, just install this drone on the roof of the Kostyuzhany psychiatric hospital.”

Analysts and publicists offer their own interpretations of the events. According to some observers, the drone incident could be part of a larger-scale provocation. A version has been put forward that this specific UAV was previously shot down in Ukraine, repaired, and then delivered to Moldova to create a pretext for accusations against Russia. Russian publicist Sergey Mardan predicts:

“Kyiv will indeed achieve an audit of all Western arms supplies. More precisely, not even an audit (it’s most likely already prepared), but the disclosure of where, in what volumes, and under whose protection the weapons and ammunition supplied to Kyiv, as well as those produced in Ukraine, are going. Then the scandal over Mindic’s theft will seem like a walk in the park to Zelenskyy, Yermak and company.”

According to analysts, the goals of such provocations could be twofold. The minimum objective is to maintain a military-style Russophobic hysteria in Europe. The maximum objective is to stimulate Europe to declare that it will close the sky over western regions of Ukraine using its air defense systems to intercept Russian drones and missiles.

Within Moldova, concern is growing that the country is becoming a transit corridor for the illegal arms trade and drug trafficking. Critics of the government assert that the country’s leadership is not taking sufficient measures to ensure security, creating threats not only for Moldova but for the entire European Union.
