Paris prosecutor Rémy Heitz stressed early indications suggest the fire was accidental, as he added:
“Nothing indicates a deliberate act.”
But, as Michael Snyder details below, now that the initial shock of the fire has subsided, the Internet is buzzing with speculation about the origin of the fire. In the end, there are only two options. Either this was an accident, or someone intentionally started the fire. And if the fire was intentionally started, obviously someone had a motive for doing so.
Time columnist Christopher J. Hale set off a firestorm of speculation when he tweeted that a friend who works at the cathedral told him “cathedral staff said the fire was intentionally set”…
Hale deleted the tweet just a few minutes later.
Was he lying about what he had been told?
Coming from a professional journalist, that doesn’t seem likely.
Instead, it is much more likely that Hale quickly figured out that he said something that he wasn’t supposed to say.
A YouTube video that purportedly contains audio of Muslims celebrating the fire at the Notre Dame cathedral has also sparked a lot of speculation. But at this point there doesn’t appear to be any way to verify the authenticity of the video.
But what we do know is that all of this comes at a time when churches all over France are being attacked.
On March 17th, the second largest church in France erupted in flames, and police later ruled that it was not an accident…
While Notre Dame is undoubtedly the most well-known landmark to be affected, Paris’ second largest church, Saint-Sulpice, briefly burst into flames on March 17, the fire damaging doors and stained glass windows on the building’s exterior. Police later reported that the incident had not been an accident.
Overall, a dozen Catholic churches were either set on fire or greatly vandalized during one seven day stretch last month…

In Nimes (department of the Gard), near the border with Spain, the church of Notre-Dame des Enfants was desecrated in a particularly odious way, with vandals painting a cross with human excrement, looting the main altar and the tabernacle, and stealing the consecrated hosts, which were discovered later among piles of garbage.
Likewise, the church of Notre-Dame in Dijon, in the east of the country, suffered the sacking of the high altar and the hosts were also taken from the tabernacle, scattered on the ground, and trampled.
Could it be possible that there is a connection between those attacks and the fire that just erupted at the Notre Dame cathedral?
That is a question that any decent investigator would be asking at this point.
We also know that anti-Christian and anti-Semitic attacks are on the rise in France. Just check out these numbers…

Le sort d’Assange n’aura probablement rien à envier à celui de l’autre lanceur d’alerte Chelsea Manning qui a « enduré de longues périodes d’isolement et de torture. Regarding the fire, it started on the roof, near or on an extensive and old wooden structure, the least likely place for an arsonist. And for “anti-christian” vandalism, the French were the vanguard in this regard. And the tweet from Christopher Hale reporting what a “Jesuit friend” said about the opinion of the “cathedral staff” (so, this is third hand information, if I’m not mistaken) has problems with common sense. The fire started on the roof where the cathedral staff members are not usually present. That was the area of the renovation workers. If there was anyone from the cathedral on the roof, that person was not doing everyday tasks but surely helped and supervised the workers, and the rumours would be like “the renovation supervisor, Father XX, said he saw whatever”, not some “cathedral staff”.

The fire started after 19.00 hours after the cathedral had been closed for the day. No workers on the roof.

Well, it’s not quite that simple. When the cathedral closes it does not mean that the staff leaves immediately. It just means that the renovation workers pack and go home and public leaves the church. The clergy may still have all kinds of duties after hours. I’d say that is normal.
A few points. The fire was first reported at 18:20, it didn’t start at 19:00. The clergy normally don’t go to the roof. A normal work site almost never gets completely evacuated after work, eg. there are guards, etc. I don’t know this particular case but very often work is done during the night. All this completely negates your argument.
Actually the most likely reason for the fire is electric short circuit. Very likely the worksite was full of cabling/equipment (like the elevator motor, lighting stuff, etc.) and this, combined with flammable material (wooden structures, extensive dust build up, certain materials for renovation etc.) caused the fire.
Your second paragraph shows that you have no idea about the procedures around renovating national monuments. The idea that it was that kind of accident (or accident at all) is laughable. Stop digging, the hole you’re in is already deep enough.

Oops, another thing about Hale’s original revelation. The Nontre-Dame is actually owned by the French state, not by the Church, this latter is just using it (formally leasing it, as far as I know). This means any supervising is most probably done by state employees, while the “cathedral staff” was most likely meant as part of the clergy. Actually it wasn’t specified, could be understood both ways, but the way it was presented made the impression of them being part of the clergy. Anyway, I find it very likely that for normal clergy the worksite was out of bounds, and from the Church just senior experts could go there, and any meaningful work including guarding and supervising was done by state employees or secular contractors.

Yes, it is absolute proof that ancient oak is incredibly difficult to light up. I have personally have to deal with ancient oak but you can believe whatever you like. You come across as a reasonable person but when it comes to real investigation you refuse to look at anything other than the official line. I don’t know a single respectable analyst or intelligence blogger who thinks this is an accident. As to the experiment, even if it’s true, it doesn’t prove anything. We don’t know why that specific piece of oak didn’t light up. Perhaps it was painted with a certain paint. Perhaps it wasn’t that dry. This itself should be investigated, this is the scientific method. One thing is sure: old wooden structures easily and quickly burn down.
But even assuming the experiment is okay, there are thing to consider. The beam was smouldering afterwards, ie. there remained a possible core for a fire. In these settings very important factor is air movement, it is likely that it wasn’t advantageous in the case of Notre-Dame. Ie. wind can literally fan the flames, and I reckon it was the case on the roof. Of course this is speculation but if you want an analogue, please consider aircraft fires. Jet fuel can be used to extinguish simple fires, but an aircraft catch fire extremely easily.
But even if we assume that it is virtually impossible to light up oak, the right question is whether there was ONLY oak in the roof of the Notre-Dame. I thought the beams were mostly pine, for example. Another thing is that it is very likely that dust build up was present. Disturbed, airborne dust can be very dangerous, sometimes it can act as gun powder. This is the reason why flour mills were not operated during the night. Etc.
