Merkel supports participation of the Assad government in the negotiations to solve the Syirian criris.

Iran’s Presstv.ir website has reported that German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the Iranian government as well as the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad must be part of any negotiations aimed at putting an end to the crisis in Syria.
Merkel is quoted as saying that, in addition to the United States, Russia, Iran and Saudi Arabia, negotiations to bring peace to Syria must also include current Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. This position is distinctly different from the current U.S. position which, up until now, has been that “Assad must go”.
It is not clear if Chancellor Merkel’s new position was cleared in advance with the U.S. government or whether her position simply reflects a new German political realism now that the consequences of U.S. and NATO efforts to change Middle Eastern governments by force are becoming more clear. We can only hope that Chancellor Merkel’s remarks will actually open the door toward a lasting peace in the Middle East.
