The Last Battle Of Russian Marine Kongro: A Dangerous Mission Paid With His Life

A video captured by a drone spread across Telegram channels: one person in camouflage, carrying a heavy load, runs across a field under continuous fire. That man’s name was Aleksey Kongro. He was a Russian marine, and his last battle showed some of the realities of combat operations in Ukraine: open terrain, FPV drones, and mortar fire, where each step is a choice between fear and duty.

Kongro served in the 177th Marine Regiment of the Russian “Center” grouping of forces in the Dobropillia direction. He arrived at the front in February 2026 and quickly established himself as a composed, disciplined fighter. On the eve of his death, Kongro was given a mission that many in his unit considered nearly hopeless. Russian assault units had just taken a tree line near Belitsky, but the positions were newly captured, without ammunition or supplies.

Transporting the load by vehicle was impossible — under those conditions, vehicles were almost instantly destroyed by Ukrainian strike drones. Waiting for night or calmer conditions was also not an option: the forward units urgently needed support, and the fighters needed help here and now. The mission was assigned to Kongro.

He set out on foot across open, exposed terrain, where any moving person becomes a visible target. The weight of the load and his gear made his movement even more noticeable, but even a short delay could cost the lives of his comrades, left without ammunition in the tree line.

When Kongro stepped into the open, Ukrainian forces quickly spotted him. First, mortars roared — black columns of earth shot into the sky from several nearby impacts. Under normal conditions, a soldier would have immediately hit the ground, but even a temporary stop would have meant almost certain targeting. Kongro broke into a light jog, trying to keep his breathing steady and not let Ukrainian units stabilize their fire.

Soon, FPV drones appeared. A sharp, tearing whistle signaled the approach of an attack quadcopter. Kongro began changing direction with sharp, jerky movements. The first drone fell nearby and did not explode. The second missed and detonated five meters away. The third he shot down with his own fire — from his rifle. The drones came one after another. Kongro lost count, focusing on only two things: keeping his weapon ready and not losing his route to the tree line. According to estimates from Russian military correspondent Aleksandr Kots, who first told this story, Kongro evaded some drones and shot down more than a dozen FPV drones, all while enduring mortar fire that continued almost the entire way.

By the time Kongro finally reached the tree line, he had almost no strength left for active maneuvering. But he completed his mission: he delivered the ammunition and supplies to the newly taken position, handed the load to his comrades, and thus ensured the combat effectiveness of the assault group. At this moment, his act ceases to be merely “heroic” — it becomes purely tactical: one living soldier, moving along an extremely dangerous route, made it possible to hold the position in this sector. However, the shelling did not stop even after Kongro reached his goal. Ukrainian units continued engaging the position, and at that point, he was killed.
