Fourteen Republican senators have submitted to the US Congress a bill designed to restore sanctions against companies involved in the laying of Nord Stream 2.
Quite literally 2 days after they were waived.
The State Department previously notified that Nord Stream 2 AG, which is building the gas pipeline, is subject to sanctions, but in the interests of national security refused to impose them.
White House spokesman Jen Psaki admitted that the pipeline will now be difficult to stop.
According to one of the authors of the document, Senator Kevin Cramer, the administration of US President Joe Biden, ” At the risk of weakening America’s global standing, the Biden Administration is acquiescing to a misguided German strategy which will give Putin a grip on our allies in Europe.”
“Days after Russian hackers successfully attacked an American pipeline, President Biden decided to give Vladimir Putin his own pipeline and hand him a major geopolitical win that cuts right through the NATO alliance,” said Senator Cramer. “At the risk of weakening America’s global standing, the Biden Administration is acquiescing to a misguided German strategy which will give Putin a grip on our allies in Europe. The Putin Pipeline must be stopped, and I urge my colleagues to join this effort before the Administration makes the United States learn the hard way why energy security means national security.”
If enacted the proposed bill would:
- Build on sanctions passed in the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), signed in December 2019 by former President Trump, by expanding the sanctions to subcontractors of any entity which works on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
- Reinstate any sanctions against the company managing the project as well as its corporate officers whose sanctions were waived by President Biden’s Administration.
“The Biden Administration’s decision to remove sanctions around the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to the benefit of Russia and Putin while at the same time canceling pipeline projects across the United States and killing thousands of jobs is truly astounding,” said Senator Thom Tillis. “Over the last four years, the United States made tremendous progress toward becoming energy independent and reducing our reliance on other countries to provide our energy, but the Biden Administration is doing everything they can to end this commonsense goal and return us to the days of high gas prices and job-killing policies. I’m proud to join my colleagues to reverse this terrible decision and reinstate sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.”
Biden is currently one step from being dubbed a “Kremlin Agent” and basically becoming former President Donald Trump version 2.0.
“The president should not take it as a good sign that he’s receiving praise from a Kremlin spokesman and a Russian Deputy Foreign Minister for a foreign policy decision,” said Senator Chuck Grassley. “Waiving sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline company and the former Stasi officer that runs it is a gift to Putin and his cronies. It’s lose-lose to shutter pipelines with our close ally Canada and sign off on them in Russia. It harms the security of our frontline allies and makes us less energy independent at home.”
The list of senators that proposed the legislation is the following, in addition to Cramer:
Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Steve Daines (R-MT), Mike Braun (R-IN), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Rick Scott (R-FL), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), John Cornyn (R-TX), Joni Ernst (R-IA), John Hoeven (R-ND), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), and Roger Wicker (R-MS).
Each of them has given a statement saying that Biden is making a mistake, killing US jobs, so on and so forth.
Nord Stream 2 envisages the laying of two lines of a gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany. Most of the pipes have already been laid; at the end of March, the operator Nord Stream 2 AG announced that it remains to complete another 121 kilometers out of the total length of two lines of 2,460 kilometers. According to the Consul General of Germany in Yekaterinburg, Matthias Kruse, 80 kilometers remained to be laid on May 17.
The project is actively opposed by Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, and above all the United States, which is promoting its liquefied natural gas to Europe. In December 2019, Washington imposed sanctions on the companies involved in the project, as a result of which the Swiss Allseas immediately ceased operations. Laying resumed a year later: in December 2020, Nord Stream 2 AG, using the Fortuna pipelayer, laid 2.6 kilometers of pipes in German waters, and on April 27, Akademik Chersky joined it off the coast of Denmark.
Now construction has reached its final stage. As stated by the head of the board of directors of “Gazprom” Viktor Zubkov, the project will be completed this year.

Russia and Germany legally laid a pipe-line to import cheaper and safer natural gas from Russia to Europe. USA is pissed off because it wants to export its much more expensive harder to store and transport LNG product to Europe instead.

To paint the picture complete: The Nordstream pipelines (2 lines) are allready in operation since 2011, and transport gas from Russia. Nordstream 2 is just the cpacity increase to cope with the supply unsecurity posed by Ukrain.

The gas thru NS2 will traded completely in EUR like it does thru NS1.
