The UN security council is to convene a meeting on Tuesday – initiated by the Russian Federation – in connection with the introduction of a Turkish armored battalion into Iraqi territory in the Nineveh province. RIA News was informed of this by a source in the UN.

“Russia has convened a session of the UN Security Council in connection to the introduction of Turkish forces into the territory of Iraq”, – said an agency spokesperson.

According to the information of Iraqi authorities, on the 4th of December a Turkish armored battalion entered into the Iraqi province of Nineveh under the pretense of training of the Kurdish peoples units which are fighting terrorists. Iraqi diplomats and the Ministry of Defense called the presence of Turkish fighters a “hostile action”, which was not agreed to by authorities.

On Sunday the Prime Minister of Iraq Haider Al-Abadi proclaimed, that the country’s authorities reserve the right to any possible measures, including making an appeal to the UN Security Council, if the Turkish troops do not abandon the country’s territory within 48 hours. On Monday he proclaimed that Turkey had 24 hours left before bringing the matter to the attention of the UN Security Council.
