Three children were killed and two other civilians were injured in a large blast that rocked the northern Syrian town of al-Qahtaniyah in the morning of August 7.

Citing sources in the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the Hawar News Agency (ANHA) said that the blast was caused by a remotely-controlled vehicle-borne improvised device (VBIED) which was parked near a local school.

“The booby-trapped car, which blew up, was war parked near al-Khulah girls’ school, in front of the post office, it was remotely detonated. Investigations are ongoing to identify the perpetrators of this terrorist attack,” Hukur Arafat, a commander in the SDF’s security forces, told the ANHA.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement released by its news agency, Amaq. The terrorist group falsely claimed that eight SDF personnel were killed or injured in the attack.

In the last few months, ISIS cells intensified their terrorist attacks in northeastern Syria. The region witnessed dozens of bombings, most of them targeted civilian areas.
