On October 16, three Iranian-backed fighters were killed during clashes with ISIS terrorists in Syria’s central region, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
The London-based monitoring group said that the fighters were attacked by the terrorists while taking part in a combing operation around the town of al-Sukhnah in the eastern countryside of Homs. The death toll from the attack could rise. Several fighters who were wounded during the clashes are currently in a critical condition.
“The wounded were transferred from Palmyra Hospital to Homs Military Hospital due to the severity of their wounds,” the SOHR’s report reads.
Many foreign armed factions are currently operating against ISIS cells in central Syria with direct support from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The most notable of these factions are Lebanon’s Hezbollah and the Afghan Fatemiyoun Brigade.
ISIS cells in the central region escalated their attacks on Syrian government forces and their allies in the last few weeks. On October 12, nine soldiers and pro-government fighters as well as three civilians were killed by the terrorists in the southern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
Government forces are not receiving support from Iranian-backed factions only, but also from the Russian military. Since the state of October, three waves of Russian airstrikes have hit ISIS hideouts in the central region.
The terrorist group’s cells in the central region sustained heavy human and material losses this year. However, their insurgency is still far from over.
