On December 12, fighter jets of the Iraqi Air Force (IQAF) carried out airstrikes on a hideout of ISIS near Lake Hamrin in the eastern Iraqi province of Diyala.
The Iraqi Security Media Cell said in a statement that the pinpoint airstrikes were carried out in coordination with the Interior Ministry’s Federal Intelligence and Investigation Agency. At least three terrorists were reported killed in the airstrikes.
The IQAF released footage of the airstrikes, which were carried out by F-16 fighter jets armed with precision-guided munitions.
A day after the airstrikes, the Iraqi military and the Popular Mobilization (PMU) Units launched a joint combing operation along Naryn River in Diyala.
“Forces from the Commando Regiment of the Diyala Operations Command of the PMU, in addition to the 2nd Battalion in the Anti-Armor Force and other forces of the PMU, carried out a security operation east and west of Naryn River in Diyala,” PMU commander Talib al-Musawi said in a statement. “The operation was launched from two axes, the first east of the Naryn River with the participation of all brigades, and the second west of the Naryn River, which was carried out by a force of the Iraqi military.”
The commander said that the joint operation is meant to neutralize ISIS remaining cells along Naryn River, restore security to the key area and to inspect the hideout targeted by the IQAF a day earlier.
The Iraqi military, intelligence, security forces and the PMU stepped up their operations against ISIS in the last few weeks. In less than ten days, four waves of airstrikes hit hideouts of the terrorist group in the northern and eastern region. As a result of this pressure, the number of terrorist attacks has declined.
