On September 8, three Israelis were killed in a shooting attack at the Allenby Bridge crossing between Jordan and the occupied West Bank.
According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the attacker arrived in a truck from Jordan and opened fire at workers at the crossing.
The attacker was shot dead by security forces shortly after opening fire, the military said in an initial statement, adding that the truck used by him was suspected of being rigged with explosives. Sappers were quickly dispatched to the scene to investigate the truck.
Israel’s Magen David Adom ambulance service said it treated three men in their 50s at the scene, before being forced to declare their deaths. The three were reportedly security guards.
Following the deadly attack, Israeli and Jordanian authorities both announced that the Allenby Bridge crossing will be closed until further notice. A Jordanian official told Reuters that the crossing, also known as the King Hussein bridge, was shut down as authorities began an investigation into the attack.
In his first comments on the attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel was “surrounded by a murderous ideology led by Iran’s axis of evil.”
The attack at the Allenby Bridge crossing came as the IDF continued its war on the Gaza Strip, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 40,000 Palestinians. It also came amid a surge in Israeli raids in the West Bank, where more than 670 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the war on Gaza last October.
