One gunman was killed and two others were wounded in a clash with Turkish police near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul on April 7, the city’s governor said, adding that two police officers were slightly wounded.

The gunmen used rifles and pistols in the attack, Governor Davut Gul told reporters at the scene, adding that there have been no Israeli diplomatic staff at the consulate for two and a half years.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel later confirmed there were no staff at the consulate at the time of the clash. This is unsurprising considering that the two countries had a fall out as a result of the war in the Gaza Strip.

Later, the Turkish Ministry of Interior revealed that the gunman who was killed in the attack was affiliated with “a terror group.” The ministry said in a statement that Yunus E.S. “was captured dead” and “had connections with a terrorist group that exploits religion.”

While the ministry didn’t immediately reveal the group the attacker was linked to, Turkish media reported it could be none other than ISIS.

The unusual attack came more than a month into the American-Israeli war on Iran, which has been retaliating throughout the region.

In the last few years, Israeli security forces announced foiling Iranian plots to carry out attacks on Israeli targets in Turkey on more than one occasion. Turkish security forces arrested many suspected agents. Nevertheless, this didn’t affect relations between Ankara and Tehran in any serious way.

During the ongoing war, Ankara accused Iran of firing missiles at its territories at least four times. Tehran denied, and there has been no escalation over these accusations.
