Early on October 31, three Katyusha [107 mm] rockets landed in the district of al-Mansour near the highly-fortified Green Zone in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, where the US Embassy is located.

An Iraqi security source told the France-Press Agency, AFP, that the rockets struck near a Red Crescent hospital, a bank and the district’s water management department. The rocket attack resulted in some material losses. However, no casualties were reported.

The real target of the attack was likely the US Embassy, which was shelled with rockets on many occasions over the last two years.

A day earlier, the Iraqi Federal Intelligence and Investigation Agency uncovered a single 107 mm rocket prepared for launch in the district of al-Shuala, to the north of al-Mansour.

The rocket attack on al-Mansour was likely carried out by Iranian-backed forces in Iraq, who have been waging an insurgency against the US in response to the assassination of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy-Commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units, and Commander of Iran’s Quds Force, Qassim Soleimani.

The attack will not likely provoke any response from Washington. US forces in Iraq only respond to attacks that result in casualties.
