On December 2, 3 Russian military police officers received light injuries when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near their armored vehicle in northeastern Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.
According to the report, the incident happened when the Russian Military Police were fulfilling a reconnaissance task along the route for a joint Russian-Turkish patrol mission some 1.5 km to the west of Koran, near Kobani (Aleppo province).
“The armored vehicle was damaged. Three Russian military, who were inside the armored vehicle, received minor injuries. The military’s lives are not under threat,” the defense ministry said.
This is the most recent in a series of provocations against Turkish and Russian patrols in northeastern Syria. Previously, radicals affiliated with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces were trying to block patrols, throwing stones and even petrol bombs at them.
Joint Turkish-Russian patrol missions are being carried out under the October 22 memorandum signed in Sochi between Russia and Turkey. The Russian Military Police work with Syrian border service and the Turkish Army in patrolling the Syrian-Turkish border. The Russian military says that the goal is to provide assistance in ensuring security of citizens and maintaining order, as well as controlling the implementation of a memorandum on withdrawing Kurdish armed groups and their weapons some 30 km from the border.
