A soldier of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) was killed and two others were wounded as a result of shelling by the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, Major General Oleg Yegorov, deputy chief of the Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria, revealed on September 6.
During a press briefing, Maj. Gen. Yegorov said that the deadly indirect fire attack took place in the southern countryside of Idlib.
“a Syrian soldier was killed and two others were wounded as a result of artillery shelling launched by terrorists from the town of Kansafra in Idlib governorate on government forces’ positions in the city of Kafr Nabl,” Yegorov said.
The Russian commander added that a second indirect fire attack targeted SAA positions in the northern countryside of Lattakia. However, no losses were reported as a result of the attack.
The al-Nusra Front, now known as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), is the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib. The terrorist group and its allies violate the ceasefire in the region, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than two years ago, on a daily basis.
On September 3, the Russian Reconciliation Center said that three SAA soldiers were killed and another was wounded as a result of a rocket attack that targeted the town of Hantoteen in the southern Idlib countryside. The attack was attributed to HTS.
The SAA and its allies are yet to response to the recent ceasefire violations by HTS. The terrorist group could face a new wave of Syrian and Russian airstrikes very soon.
The ceasefire in Greater Idlib will likely go on, as the warring parties do not appear to be interested in a full-blown military confrontation right now.
