Turkish combat drones have reportedly carried out three airstrikes on areas held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Syria’s northeastern region.

On October 12, a Turkish drone strike hit a vehicle of the SDF’s Syriac Security Office, Sutoro, as it was passing near the town of al-Malikiyah in the northeastern countryside of al-Hasakah. In a statement, the Sutoro acknowledged that one of its personnel was killed as a result of the strike. Meanwhile, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), reported that three others security personnel were wounded.

Minutes after the first strike, the SOHR said that a second Turkish drone strike hit a position of the SDF near al-Malikiyah. This was not confirmed, however.

Later on October 12, a Turkish drone strike hit a depot in the SDF-held part of the town of al-Qamishli in the northern al-Hasakah countryside. The strike caused some material losses. However, no casualties were reported.

The drone strikes were most likely a response to recent attacks on Turkish forces in northern and northeastern by the SDF and its affiliates.

Turkey has been trying to deter the SDF with its air power for a few months now. Turkish combat drones inflicted some serious human and material losses on the group. However, the SDF is yet to stop its attacks on Turkish forces.

The failure to deter the SDF could eventually force Ankara to kick off a new large-scale ground operation in northern and northeastern Syria.
