Late on March 9, at least three people were wounded in a shooting attack that took place at the heart of the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.
According to initial reports and video footage that surfaced online, a gunman opened fire at people near a cafe on the corner of Dizengoff Street and Ben Gurion Street. The gunman, allegedly a Palestinian, was quickly killed by Israeli police officers at the scene.
Israel’s Magen David Adom ambulance service said that three people were wounded by gunshots. The wounded were taken to the Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv. One was listed in critical condition, while the other two were listed in serious and moderate condition.
Following the shooting attack, Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai called on anti-government protesters throughout the city to clear the streets in order to facilitate police work.
The attack came just hours after undercover Israeli police officers killed three fighters of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) during a raid in the northern West Bank village of Jaba’. The PIJ local wing called the raid a “cowardly assassination operation” and vowed to retaliate.
Palestinians carried out several shooting, ramming and stabbing attacks in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and different parts of the occupied West Bank over the last few months in response to a series of Israeli raids and operations that targeted their areas.
The shooting attack in Tel Aviv will likely lead to even more escalation by Israel, which will respond with brute force as it did in the past.
