On January 22, the Tiger Forces liberated the key town of Abu al-Duhur from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda) in the eastern part of Idlib province, according to pro-government sources.
However, there are still no photos or videos available from the town to confirm these claims.
If reports about the liberation of Abu al-Duhur is true, this will be a major blow to militant groups operating in the province. The control over Abu al-Duhur will also allow the Syrian Arab Army and its allies to take control over the southern Aleppo countryside, northeast of Abu al-Duhur and to set a foothold for further operations in Idlib.
However, the SAA will still have to deal with ISIS and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham members in northeastern Hama before it launches further operations in Idlib province. Last weekend, the SAA captured the Abu al-Duhur airbase and encircmed them there.
