On June 8, the head of the Ukrainian Transcarpathian region claimed that the western Ukrainian region will no longer supply fuel received from the EU to other regions of Ukraine.
According to the local official, European fuel will not leave the borders of the Transcarpathian region until the needs of the region are met.
“Local fuel companies of Transcarpathia refused to supply fuel to other regions until the needs of our region are met. And this is even despite the super—profitable offers,” Mr Mikita said.
Ukraine suffers an acute shortage of fuel all around the country. Drivers are forced to stand in long queues at gas stations for hours, and the volume of gasoline and diesel per car is limited. Since the very beginning of the Russian military operations in Ukraine, the strategic oil facilities in Ukraine were struck, as a result, the oil refining industry was disrupted.
Since May, Kiev has been asking France, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to help with the organization of fuel supplies. In order to facilitate the supplies from Europe, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine arranged the passage of fuel trucks at the border without waiting in line to speed up fuel supplies since June 7. In mid-May, Kiev suspended state regulation of prices for motor fuel in order to saturate the market amid a growing shortage of gasoline and diesel.
The claims of the head of the Transcarpathian region reveal that the crisis turns into catastrophe and that the Kiev’s authorities are impotent to coordinate the measures to resolve the problems in the Ukrainian regions. As a result, local authorities take the initiative to the detriment of their counterparts.
