A base of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor was attacked late in September 29 by Arab tribal fighters who have been waging an armed uprising against the Kurdish-led group for more than a month.
Tribal fighters fired mortars at the base, a former school in the town of al-Shheell, then attempted to storm it. The attack lasted until the morning of September 30.
Activists close to tribal forces alleged that several fighters of the SDF were killed or wounded. However, this is yet to be confirmed.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that tribal fighters launched the attack with support from government forces. The London-based monitoring group even alleged that the SDF base was shelled from government territory on the western bank of the Euphrates River.
The United State-led coalition, who maintains two bases at the Conoco gas plant in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside and al-Omar oil fields in the southern countryside of the governorate, didn’t intervene in the clashes.
The armed uprising in Deir Ezzor broke out on August 27 after the SDF arrested Rashid Abu Khawla, the leader of its largest Arab faction, the Deir Ezzor Military Council, and launched a crackdown in the governorate with support from the coalition.
The SDF crackdown failed to end the uprising. On September 25, tribal fighters launched a large-scale raid against the group’s positions in Diban. More than 20 were killed in the clashes. Several smaller attacks were reported in the following days.
Currently, the uprising is being led by Sheikh Ibrahim al-Hafel, a prominent figure of the large and influential Al Uqaydat tribe.
Recent attacks in Deir Ezzor show that the SDF is no longer in control of the situation there. The group is currently attempting to regain control by deploying reinforcements and imposing curfews. These measures could lead to even more escalation.
