United States President Donald Trump vowed to respond to Iran’s retaliatory strikes on August 31, confirming that one of the American bases targeted by the Islamic Republic was hit.
“We’re going to hit them hard. There will be a response,” Trump told Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst.
The U.S. president’s remarks to Fox News came right after he lashed out at Iran in a Truth Social post, calling it a “failed nation.”
“They have no Navy, they have no Air Force, they have no currency, they are not paying their soldiers or police, Inflation is at 300%, and their leadership is in total disarray and incapable of properly representing the country,” Trump wrote. “The only thing they have is FAKE NEWS from the USA, a willingness to kill their protesters (now over 100,000 people dead. They must be tried for war crimes against humanity!), and a good line of ‘BULL—-.'”
The U.S. launched its first attack on Iran in over a month late on August 30, striking two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island.
A Central Command spokesman said the attack came after U.S. forces said they observed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces “preparing to launch rockets with sea mines” into the Strait of Hormuz.
The Islamic Republic retaliated early the next day, targeting U.S. military assets at bases in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
“Aggression and crimes will not solve the enemy’s desperation in attempting to weaken the Islamic Republic’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, and every attack will be met with even more devastating responses,” the IRGC said in a statement to the Iranian state-run Fars News Agency.
Trump told Fox News that almost all of the missiles launched by Iran at the base in Jordan were intercepted, acknowledging that there was a hit.
Responding to the U.S. president’s latest threat, a senior Iranian source told Reuters that for every attack on Iran, Tehran will deliver a “response dozens of times greater.” The source also said Iran’s retaliation against the strikes on Larak showed that “no target in the region is beyond Tehran’s reach.”
The exchange of fire overnight will likely mark the start of another limited confrontation between the U.S. and Iran that go on for days, or even weeks.
The Islamic Republic will not likely take a step back, especially when it comes to the Strait of Hormuz, which remains under its tight control. At the same time, the confrontation is not likely to lead to the resumption of full-on war. The U.S. appears to lack the will, the plans, and even the capability to reengage in a wide conflict.
