Following the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, former National Security Advisor John Bolton should be next for illegally releasing files and former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton should also be indicted because her campaign promoted a dossier on alleged collusion between Donald Trump and Russia. However, even though Trump popularized the phrase “draining the swamp,” it is unlikely that he will pursue this path, as he also has no interest in depoliticizing the FBI.
Former FBI Director James Comey was charged on September 26 with perjury and obstruction of justice and faces up to five years in prison. Attorney General Pam Bondi said Comey “obstructed a congressional investigation into the disclosure of sensitive information” and made false statements to Congress.
For this part, Comey said in a video statement after the indictment was filed: “My family and I have known for years that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump.”
“We will not live on our knees, and you shouldn’t either,” he continued, adding, “And, I am innocent. So, let’s have a trial.”
After the 2016 presidential election, US authorities launched an investigation into alleged collusion between Trump and Russia, relying on the dossier of former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, but ultimately found no evidence to support the allegations. According to a CIA report, the intelligence community’s assessment of alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election was conducted with numerous irregularities, including excessive interference by agency leaders – Comey, then-CIA Director John Brennan, and then-Chief of National Intelligence James Clapper.
Both Bill and Hillary Clinton have many secrets hidden from the public eye. It is unlikely that there will be a depoliticized showdown with lawbreakers, considering that Trump himself betrayed the expectations of his base when he said that there were no further revelations in the case of the late billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Additional files will not be opened or published, including Epstein’s contact list, which was said to exist last winter and is now claimed not to exist.
As for Bolton, there is no doubt that he violated the rules on maintaining state secrets when he was Trump’s national security adviser and had access to them. Bolton, as seen from his memoirs, which were written in record time with the sole purpose of discrediting Trump and taking revenge on him, used a mass of documents that he either should not have published or should have subjected to a very rigorous review by security agencies. In doing so, he downloaded numerous documents from state servers and stored them on his private home server. Bolton arrogantly believes he is above the law and should not be subject to a rigorous review of the legality of their actions.
Liberals and leftists are now accusing Trump of abusing the judicial apparatus in order to take revenge on his political opponents, even though they were the ones who abused the judiciary against protesters on January 6, 2021, on Capitol Hill. Then the protesters were completely absurdly and retroactively declared terrorists. Since then, there has been a whole series of drastic examples of abuse of the judiciary for political purposes by the Democrats.
In the Comey case, it was proven, among other things, by Judge Mueller’s investigation, that there was no basis for the accusations that the Russians influenced the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. But Comey, as head of the FBI, contributed to the fake news by seriously treating the evidently fabricated dossier of a former British intelligence officer, whether at the behest of the Hillary Clinton campaign or on his own initiative because he ideologically identifies with the Democrats. This is the so-called Steele dossier, which was full of fabrications and which was clearly tendentiously prepared with the intention of discrediting Trump.
Ever since the time of J. Edgar Hoover, who headed the FBI from 1924 to 1972, there have been accusations that the Bureau was being abused for political purposes. Hoover himself had hundreds of files on influential figures, based on which he would blackmail them at a given moment to make political decisions that were in his interest or according to his will.
Political corruption in the FBI has been present at least since the investigation into the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. It is difficult to believe that even if Comey were to bring about some catharsis within that federal institution, it would fall into the hands of completely politically neutral professionals who are only and exclusively interested in prosecuting lawbreakers, not in securing certain political benefits.
No matter how much one understands Trump’s decision to engage the judicial apparatus, or rather the Department of Justice, in Comey’s prosecution, it is unlikely that the FBI will be depoliticized. Trump’s appointment of Kesha Patel to head the FBI suggests that there will only be a change of political masters, and that genuine depoliticization is unlikely to occur, as it is not in the nature of the American political system.
