President Donald Trump on October 31 denied that the United States was considering strikes against targets linked to drug cartels inside Venezuela.
When asked by reporters if recent media reports that he was considering strikes within Venezuela were true, Trump said, “No.”
Last August, the Trump administration doubled the reward for the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to $50 million on drug trafficking charges then deployed an amphibious ready group with thousands of marines close to the country’s shores on a so-called “counter narco-terror operation”.
Tensions mounted in recent days with the U.S. sending its bombers near the country’s coast three times and ordering the deployment of an entire carrier strike group to the Caribbean Sea.
Since the start of the escalation, the U.S. military has carried out 14 strikes against boats allegedly carrying drugs in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing 61 people.
A report published by The Wall Street Journal earlier on October 31 revealed that the U.S. was considering launching strikes against Venezuelan military targets allegedly used for drug-trafficking. The report noted that the discussions are preliminary and no final decision has been made.
Later, however, a report published by the Miami Herald said that the Trump Administration had made the decision to attack military targets in Venezuela, and that the strikes could begin “in a matter of days or even hours.”
In recent weeks, Trump has publicly said his administration will carry out strikes against drug-related targets inside Venezuela.
“The land is going to be next,” Trump told reporters just last week.
Trump practiced deception in the past, most notably when he gave Iran an ultimatum during its war with Israel last June, then proceeded to order strikes on three of the Islamic Republic’s most important nuclear sites. He later boasted about the operation.
When it comes to Venezuela, there are some strong indications that the U.S. is in fact about to launch strikes against the country.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), acting under the direction of the Department of Defense, issued on October 31 a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) establishing temporary flight restrictions over an area off the southeast coast of Puerto Rico. According to the FAA, the restrictions are for “Special Security Reasons.”
While the agency did not specify the nature of the “special security reasons,” the timing of the NOTAM suggests that it could be related to an attack on Venezuela.
Additionally, Carlos A. Gimenez, a member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, on October 31 wrote on X Venezuela “will be free,” implying that something could indeed happen.

Venezuela has been preparing for a confrontation with the U.S. since August. All of the country’s air defenses have been already deployed, especially around Caracas. The country will not likely respond to any attack, but could attempt to repel strikes. The U.S. could use this as an excuse to escalate even more.
Trump previously refused to deny that the U.S. is pursuing the removal of Maduro. It is very clear that a regime change is on Washington’s agenda. The reason is also very straightforward. Venezuela has one of the world’s largest oil and gas reserves.
