It is easy to ridicule Trump’s arrogance, and I don’t demure from it. However, Venezuela is a good battleground for the Americans to choose if they are to confront the Russians militarily. The USA has a long history of military involvement in South America and the Caribbean. Just looking at a map would tell you that the USA is strongly strategically placed. I think the Russians are careful and wise and I believe they would not get involved on a battleground of their enemies choosing. This is just sensible strategic thinking. Russia could support the Venezuelans in the same way they supported the Vietnamese. However, I don’t think the Venezuelans have the metal for such a conflict. Alternatively the Russians could counter strike in an area where they are strategically strong. This is what I would have done during the Cuba crisis and taken Berlin. At the moment it’s just chest thumping and bluster. But it could escalate. I think there is a higher probability of America invading Venezuela than say Iran. At the moment I think the Russians have a difficult situation. They will realize that being drawn into a military conflict in Venezuela is fighting on the battleground of their enemies choosing. On the other hand Russia must have some redlines of their own. I know this is so as I am certain ant attack on Crimea would result in a furious response. Not sure about Venezuela.
