United States President Donald Trump said on May 15 that a nuclear deal with Iran may be close, voicing optimism at avoiding a military confrontation with the Islamic Republic.
“We’re not going to be making any nuclear dust in Iran,” Trump said after a meeting in the Qatari capital, Doha, with business leaders. “I think we’re getting close to maybe doing a deal without having to do this.”
“So we’ll see what happens but we’re in very serious negotiations with Iran for long-term peace,” the President continued.
“Iran has sort of agreed to the terms,” he added. “We’re getting close to maybe doing a deal.”
Following a tense period earlier this year which saw Trump directly threatening Iran with military action, the two sides launched indirect nuclear talks with help from Oman on April 12. So far, five rounds of talks have been held, with the U.S. Special Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi leading the talks.
Trump’s remarks from Doha were not surprising as both U.S. and Iranian officials had praised the last round of talks, held earlier this week.
In fact, just hours before the remarks, an Iranian official told NBC News that the Islamic Republic was willing to agree to a deal with the U.S. in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
Ali Shamkhani, an adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said that Tehran would commit to never making nuclear weapons, getting rid of its stockpiles of highly-enriched uranium, agree to only enrich uranium to the lower levels needed for civilian use, and allow international inspectors to supervise the process.
U.S. officials have offered varying statements regarding whether they’ll accept a deal that allows Iran to enrich Uranium in a restricted way.
While significant progress has been apparently made in the talks between the U.S. and Iran, a nuclear deal may not see the light for weeks, or even months. Israel has so far done nothing to intervene in the talks, but this could happen soon. After all, it was Israeli pressure that pushed Trump to pull out of the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
In addition, a nuclear deal is not guaranteed to end all tensions between the U.S. and Iran, as the Trump administration remains critical of Tehran support to its allies in the Middle East, from the Houthis in Yemen to Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

big wow. iran already made such an agreement with russia. russia will store and supply iran’s nuke material. the enrichment ploy was designed to do what it did…make the u.s. sit down and talk. they could have had such an agreement the last time the orange baboon was in office, but they thought they had the upper hand then and demanded iran negotiate their missiles away. no way. now they don’t and those missiles and relationships are still a deal breaker.
iran did not make big concessions, this is b.s. they did what every last person with a brain knew they would do, and it’s working. the nuke deal was always possible, as it was setup to be possible. wait and see if tramp says they could have a had nuke deal, it was all ready to go, but that iran is inflexible on a major point and endangers this ‘monumental achievement’. if he does, it’s a scam. if not, iran wins and israel loses. we’ll see.

again, this is a monumental concession offered by such a high-ranking official deeply involved in nuclear negotiations.

“so it’s over $200 billion but 160 in terms of the jets, that’s fantastic,” trump said of the deal involving qatar airways reaching an agreement with boeing and ge aerospace to acquire boeing 787 dreamliner and 777x aircraft powered by ge aerospace engines. boeing’s stock rose 1.7% wednesday immediately after the headlines hit.
of course defense and arms continue to be a big theme, coming off trump’s saudi leg of the trip. “defense secretary pete hegseth also signed agreements regarding defense, including a statement of intent on defense cooperation between the state of qatar and the united states,” reports cnn. “hegseth also signed offer and acceptance letters for mq 9b aircrafts and fs-lids. trump signed a joint declaration of cooperation between the state of qatar and the united states of america.”
as we said before, this remains the bread and butter of historic us-gulf relations.among the deals include qatar acquiring “counter-drone” capabilities from us defense company raytheon, valued at $1billion, as well as mq-9b drones from general atomics, an agreement valued at $2 billion.
we should note that there seems to be some exaggerated numbers being casually tossed about amid the array of headlines coming out of doha, given especially qatar’s gdp is just over $200 billion… and yet the t-word keeps being used, interestingly enough:in a statement, the white house has said the agreements signed today between trump and qatar’s emir sheikh tamim bin hamad al-thani will “generate an economic exchange worth at least $1.2 trillion”.
the statement pointed to $243.5 in economic deals, which includes qatar airways buying boeing planes, weapons acquisitions, and deals related to natural gas and quantum technologies. it also said the us and qatar had signed a statement of intent outlining over $38bn in potential investments including support for burden-sharing at al udeid air base, as well as future defense capabilities related to air defense and maritime security.
ambrose evans-pritchard has also sounded a tone of skepticism amid the avalanche of breathless “trillion dollar” headlines from the gulf tour: at crude near $60 a barrel saudi arabia faces fiscal trouble and belt-tightening austerity. at $50 or lower it faces a slow-motion crisis and ultimately an existential threat to its economic model. that fate is no longer a remote tail-risk.
donald trump cares little for such hard economic constraints as he visits saudi arabia. the petrostates of the gulf represent a vast pot of money in his pre-modern mind. he aims to scoop up $1 trillion dollars (£760bn) of saudi wealth, even more than the $600bn already promised over four years by crown prince mohammed bin salman. he wants another trillion and a half from the rest of the gulf. good luck with that.
