Trump To Name Heather Nauert As U.S. Ambassador To U.N. - Media

President Donald Trump is to nominate State Department spokeswoman and former Fox News anchor Heather Nauert as US Ambassador to the United Nations, according to two anonymous White House officials cited by Reuters.

Nauert has absolutely no prior policy or political experience and she would be part of the solution to some of the world’s most complicated issues.

Trump is expected to announce the decision on the morning of December 7th on Twitter, according to the anonymous sources.

“Nauert, whose nomination would require Senate confirmation, is a former Fox News Channel correspondent and anchor. She became the State Department’s spokeswoman in April 2017 and was named earlier this year as the acting undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs.”

If the rumor is true, the 48-year-old Nauert would succeed Nikki Haley, who said in October that she would be vacating her UN post at the end of 2018. Some political commentators have openly described Haley as “Israeli Ambassador to the UN” judging by her conduct and obvious fondness of the Middle East country.

It would also not be a surprise if the next US Ambassador to the UN also furthers Israel’s agenda, as has become customary under the Trump administration.

It is possible that the opposite be true, however, an unnamed White House official said that the UN Ambassador post would not remain part of the Cabinet, as it has been under Haley.

The US State Department declined to provide a comment and Nauert did not immediately respond Reuters request for a comment.

Heather Nauert was considered as a successor to White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders earlier in 2018. She gained experience on diplomacy by working at the State Department, but still has no political experience, unlike Haley who was a former South Carolina governor.

“Having the direct support of the president and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo could buttress her image, however, among global diplomats at the United Nations, who have bristled at Trump’s “America First” foreign policy,” Reuters claimed

If she is to be assigned to the post, she would face several challenges – forwarding the US agenda to combat Iranian influence in the Middle East, ensuring that the UN maintain sanctions on North Korea, possibly blame Russia and/or China for every misconduct on the planet and, also, assist the Israeli Ambassador to the UN in protecting Israel’s interesting in every occasion.

Trump has been critical of the UN, claiming that it focuses too much on bureaucracy.

He pulled the US from the UN human rights body, due to it being biased against Israel, according to him. The Trump administration cut funding for the UN refugee agency, while also proposing US funding cuts for aid and diplomacy.

The Trump administration also pressured the UN into following through on his foreign policy agenda on North Korea.

Most recently, the US blocked a resolution that was aimed at establishing a ceasefire in Yemen, which was already watered down by the UK and blamed the Houthi for the entire Saudi-led intervention.

Nauert is probably expected to be more loyal, since Haley on several occasions openly criticized and confronted Donald Trump, in addition to keeping a much stronger rhetoric towards Russia. While Rex Tillerson was the US Secretary of State, Haley took the lead on several key issues such as a decision to cut funding to Palestinians and delivered speeches at the UN and elsewhere, without the secretary’s approval.

Current Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, however, appears to be much more assertive in his policy and Nauert may be more subordinate, keeping in mind White House Security Adviser John Bolton’s influence on foreign policy.

Bloomberg cited Loren DeJonge Schulman, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security. “In the absence of any actual diplomatic experience I suppose it’s reassuring to UN supporters that she will arrive with no particular personal agenda.” But in a reference to Nauert’s background as a spokeswoman, she added, “It’s not a role for merely reading talking points.”

However, it could be that is exactly what the Trump Administration is looking for in its ambassador.
