United States President Donald Trump said on July 20 that he has directed the Pentagon to kill “many times” the number of Iranians for every American soldier killed by Tehran.
“Every time Iran kills an American Soldier they will pay for that killing many times over! This directive has been passed on to Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Daniel Caine, and every Leader in the Military,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, without elaborating.
Two American soldiers were killed in an Iranian attack on Jordan over the weekend. A third went missing, and several others were wounded. Separately, another soldier was killed in Iraq while disposing of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone.
These official numbers do not, however, reflect the whole truth about American losses. Earlier in the day, The New York Times reported that the Pentagon has refrained from disclosing other casualties from prior Iranian attacks on Jordan. CBS News later reported that nearly 100 American service members have been injured in multiple Iranian attacks across the Middle East this month.
Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed the numbers in a statement to the news network, saying almost 100 people “were deemed to have some degree of injury since July 7, 2026,” 96% of whom have returned.
“They are determined to get back in the fight. The vast majority of injuries experienced were minor concussions,” Parnell said.
Trump’s latest post suggests the two sides are heading toward further escalation, and Israel may not stay on the sidelines.
Israel’s Channel 12 reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is holding a security consultation amid the escalating U.S.-Iran confrontation, with multiple scenarios being discussed — including the possibility that Israel could be drawn into the conflict if the Islamic Republic chooses to target it.
According to the report, Israeli defense officials told elected leaders that there is an active debate in Iran over whether to bring Israel into the line of fire.
Israel is reportedly coordinating closely with U.S. Central Command in the event the conflict broadens, while the military has taken steps in recent days to ensure it can respond rapidly should the situation escalate.
Last week, Axios reported that the U.S. plans to deploy “dozens” of additional aerial refueling aircraft to give Trump the ability to expand military operations against Iran.
The news website said the U.S. president was presented with several new military options during a recent Situation Room meeting, including strikes on Iranian power plants and other infrastructure, as well as additional attacks on suspected nuclear facilities, including an operation targeting the underground Pickaxe Mountain site.
Overall, the memorandum of understanding signed by the U.S. and Iran last month to end the war is now very much dead. A full-on regional conflict may be just a few days away.

we can only hope that russia and the prc will rise to the occasion when it is most critically needed. like vacating their seats at the un of $tates and announcing that an attack on iran is an attack on russia and china… powerful and necessary statement given the world’s place and time that probably should have been said in the well of the unsc in manhattan during the start of the 12 day war last year!… amazing that it hasn’t been done yet?
