Joking during remarks at the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches in Florida on May 1, President Donald Trump said that the United States would be “taking over” Cuba “almost immediately” after Iran.
“And he comes from, originally, a place called Cuba, which we will be taking over almost immediately,” Trump said, speaking to representative Dan Mica.
“Cuba’s got problems. We’ll finish one first. I like to finish a job,” he added.
Trump then went on to suggest that he could send one of the U.S. largest aircraft carriers in a show of force near Cuba after ending the war on Iran.
“On the way back from Iran, we’ll have one of our big — maybe the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier — the biggest in the world,” he said.
“We’ll have that come in, stop about 100 yards offshore, and they’ll say, ‘Thank you very much, we give up,” he added.
Tensions between the two countries have been on the rise since Trump ordered a special operation to capture Nicolas Maduro, the long-term leader of Cuban ally Venezuela, earlier this year. More than 30 Cuban troops who were guarding Maduro’s residency in Caracas were killed in the operation.
Right after, Trump vowed to starve Cuba of oil, amid one of the worst energy crises in the history of the communist-ruled nation.
Russia has since shipped oil to Cuba. A floating power ship operated by the Turkish company Karpowership also returned to the nation.
Recent weeks saw more escalations with reports suggesting that the U.S. is preparing military plans for Cuba, and Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel vowing to fight back.
While presented as a joke, Trump’s latest remarks should be taken very seriously. Just a day earlier, Trump signed an executive order on Friday broadening U.S. sanctions against the Cuban government. The fresh sanctions target people, entities and affiliates that support the Cuban government’s security apparatus or are alleged to be complicit in corruption or serious human rights violations, as well as agents, officials or supporters of the government.
Cuba’s foreign minister, Bruno Rodriguez said that the sanctions constituted “collective punishment” of the nation’s people.
“We firmly reject the recent unilateral coercive measures adopted by the #UnitedStates government,” he posted on X.
While Trump has suggested more than once that the U.S. could move against Cuba in a way or another after the war on Iran is over, this could happen at any movement. A military operation in the island nation could come faster, without much preparations to be noticed by observers, due to its proximity to the U.S. mainland.
