Local authorities in the southern Turkish province of Gaziantep announced on January 13 that Turkish-backed forces in the northern Syrian town of Jarabulus had foiled a suicide attack.

In a statement, the province’s authorities claimed the suicide attack was set to target a hospital in Jarabulus, which is located in northern Aleppo.

Two suspects were inspected upon attempting to enter the hospital. A suicide belt with 1,5 kg of TNT explosives and shrapnel was found with one of them. Medical tests confirmed that the two individuals were intoxicated.

According to Gaziantep authorities, an investigation was launched into the incident. The two individuals are suspected to be linked to ISIS.

Syrian opposition activists provided a different story on what happened at Jarabulus hospital on January 13. According to the activists, a Turkish-backed militant, who was heading to Jarabulus hospital for a medical check, handed over his suicide belt at the entrance to a nurse voluntarily.

Suicide belts are commonly worn by militants across Syria as a form of prestige. Turkish-backed militants were seen wearing suicide belts during the battle of Afrin in 2018 and in other Turkish-occupied parts of Syria.

The incident at Jarabulus hospital is an example of the chaos in Turkish-occupied areas in northern and northeastern Syria. Instead of fixing the situation, Turkey is using such incidents as a propaganda.
