Turkey-led Forces Enter Tell Rifaat In Northern Syria - Unconfirmed

A look at Tell Rifaat

According to some pro-Turkish sources, the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) started a push to take control of the city of Tell Rifaat, located southeast of the city of Afrin in northern Syria, on March 27. Unconfirmed reports also appeared that the TAF and the FSA had already entered the town.

When Turkey’s Operation Olive Branch started on January 20, Tell Rifaat was controlled by a force led by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG). Later, the YPG shared control over the Tell Rifaat coutnryside to the National Defense Forces – a pro-government militia integrated into the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).

If it’s confirmed that the TAF and the FSA entered Tell Rifaat, this will mean that Ankara and the Syrian-Iranian-Russian alliance had reached a kind of behind the scene deal on handing over control of the city to Turkey and its proxies.

Unconfirmed reports also started appearing that the NDF started withdrawing from all the former YPG-held areas in which it had been deployed south of Afrin over the last month.

The situation is developing.

Russia has been doing absolutely everything to avoid a confrontation with Turkey, but now I think Putin has no more space for manouvering. Erdogan is always saying he wants all Sunni lands in both Syria and Iraq, so lets see his next moves. I´m really afraid that both do not have easy choices anymore.

You can call me Al

It depends if Erdy does not adhere with his promises to make this a temporary incursion with an immediate withdrawal afterwards.

George King

Luigi, Erdogan did have dreams of Ottoman revival but that was as a member of NATO and what he thought were US collusion as is the US relationship with SA & Israel. But the greater Israel expansion would have not left anything for Erdogan or revival of the Ottoman rule. So Erdogan was in the sights of Israel and Empire as use and dispose which became apparent with the assassination attempt and coup.

Monşak

Turkey can take Tel Rifaat but Afrin will be vietnam for Turkey muhahahahaaaaaaaa

Well, since kurds don´t cooperate why should Russia defend them? Still not good move though….

@Inc2Get

Excellent! As i’ve said before, Putin, Assad and Erdogan already agreed to a Syrian plan when the SAA launched the Idlib operation. The plan was that the SAA would capture Abu Duhur airbase and the entire pocket within, secure it and then allow Turkey to establish checkpoints as per agreed with the russians in order to prevent the jihadis in Idlib to launch any attack against the SAA when the Tiger Forces redeployed to Eastern Ghouta.

After that, Turkey wanted Afrin and all of the bordering towns unless the SAA manages to convince the kurds to hand over the bordering towns. That is why, when the turks launched to Afrin operation, the SAA repeatedly urged the kurds to hand over Afrin but the kurds denied the demand. I really hope Turkey attacks Manbij and all of the bordering towns so that the kurds can learn their lesson!

If people are wondering why the Assad always criticize Erdogan, it’s to show the Syrian people that he “will protect them” while at the same time cutting a deal with them under the table. This is strategic politics. The troops deployed to Afrin from the NDF were mere 150 in numbers and they weren’t send or anything but volunteered.

Not a good look, feeding pieces of Syria to Erdogan hoping it will sate his appetite at least temporarily, instead of only fueling his greed. How can Russia ever stand up to the West if it can’t even do so with Turkey?

Monşak

You know nothing Jon Snow, Turkey and Russia are partners, Next week Russia will open a nuclear reactor in Turkey.

Ma_Laoshi

Well I don’t know everything for sure, but some variation of what you say seems indeed to be going on, which made me write “not a good look”. If Russia offers Syrian land as a bargaining chip to Turkey to further energy and trade projects (which Ankara would accept anyway if these are in its economic interest), then where is the Syrian interest in this? There is a bigger interest than juicy contracts for connected oligarchs and it’s tied to the question “Can Russia protect its allies?” If being a Russian ally puts you on the chopping board, this won’t win any undecideds to Russia’s cause.

velociraptor

You are right 100%-ly.

Ronald

Turkey is simply undermining the US position for being in Syria, the Kurds.

Monşak

What will Assad lose if Russia gives Tal Rifaat to Turkey? Nothing.

They will either kill assad or send him to Iran anyway, then they will appoint another puppet as president, and Astana process will be successful.

Turkey and Russia have Nuclear agreement, Turkish stream (gas pipeline to europe), Blue Stream, S-400, tourism etc. They are like partners in everything.

Key to this “to show the Syrian people that he “will protect them” if they will disarm and turn over all Syrian proper to Syrian administration. I also believe you are correct on “strategic politics”.

Kurds inability to accept Syrian/Russian offer to disarm and Syrian administration is the only reason Turkey is allowed in on a working agreement with the Syrian alliance.

Langaniso Mhlobo

Turkey is the only country which will push Europeans and Americans out from Syria. and destroy SDF.Sunnis and Shias can work together if there is no instigators like USA/NATO.
