Turkey is preparing to deploy its Syrian proxies in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region where it has been battling the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) for decades, the Hawar News Agency (ANHA) reported on December 24.
Sources familiar with the alleged plan told the Kurdish Syrian agency that Turkey will deploy militants from al-Qaeda’s Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and the Turkistan Islamic Party who fought beside its forces in northern and northeastern Syria before.
The Syrian militants will reportedly be deployed in Haftanin, Kirkuk, Sinjar and Diyala, where a new pro-Turkey coalition called the Turkistan Mobilization Units will be formed.
“The Turkish occupation wants to occupy border areas 8 to 14 km deep in southern Kurdistan, and to declare them a permanent safe zone,” ANHA quoted one of the sources as saying.
ANHA was one of the first outlets to reveal Turkey’s plans to send Syrian militants to Libya and later to Azerbaijan. The agency is well informed on the movements of Ankara’s Syrian proxies.
Earlier this year, the Turkish military launched a number of operations against PKK cells in the Kurdistan Region. The operations failed to neutralize the Kurdish guerrilla group’s threat.
Turkeyб which sent thousands of Syrian militants to fight for its interests in Libya and Azerbaijanб will not likely hesitate to use them against the PKK in northern Iraq. The role of these militants in Kurdistan may go beyond fighting to bring a demographic change in the Kurdish region.

They may be well informed but this story is sounding so unbelievable I’m doubtful they’re right this time, too many groups are going to oppose this move to make it a politically acceptable operation, so lets go through the list of potential problems this will cause for Turkey. China for a start won’t like the TIP being moved from Syria to Iraq, so they’ll not only be one of the biggest objectors but also the one those countries that can do something about it, so lets get ready for some strong diplomatic moves from China if this story turns out to be correct. And the US doesn’t like designated terrorists being flown all around the world to fight Erdogan’s battles, flying moderate opposition forces to a battle zone is one thing, but flying terrorists to the same or a different battle zone is another kettle of fish, so the US will also oppose this move. And although both Iran and Turkey fight terrorist forces on Iraqi soil, and have sometime even been accused of cooperating together, I don’t think Iran will be happy about this if it happens, they’re already worried about Azerbaijani separatists in their own country and now the Turks are going to ship in some of their terrorist friends right next door, mmm. And the Iraqi PUK Peshmerga will absolutely spit the dummy if this happens, I’ll bet they end up attacking the TIP units if they get a chance, and maybe even the Turks too, this is going to fire them right up like nothing has before. :] And the Iraqi Government has already warned both the Turks and Iranians about their anti terrorist operations being too indiscriminate and over reaching, so they may be a little objectionable to an increase of Turkish activity, especially since it’ll be Turkish proxies instead of Turkish troops this time.
