Turkey is fully prepared for a new military operation in Syria and could launch it at any time, said Ibrahim Kalin, Turkish Presidential Spokesman, during an interview with Haberturk TV on June 26.
The Turkish military and its proxies have been preparing for the operation, which will target the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), since May.
Kalin told Haberturk TV that Turkey has already conducted three large-scale military operations in Syria without waiting for permission from anyone.
“Our President said that the operation could start at any time,” the spokesman said. “An assessment was made there and everything necessary was done”.
The senior diplomat went on to claim that Turkey will not take any steps against the territorial integrity of Syria during the operation.
In a recent speech, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revealed that the main targets of the operation will be the towns of Tell Rifaat and Manbij in the northern countryside of Aleppo. The two towns are held by the SDF. However, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Russian forces are also present there. Due to this, any military move by Ankara in this area without the permission of Damascus and Moscow could lead to a military confrontation.

The SDF and the SAA has been making defensive preparations in Manbij and Tell Rifaat as well as in other parts of northern and northeastern Syria for several weeks now. Russian forces have also taken several measures to deter the Turkish military and its proxies.
Turkey appears to be determined to go on with its military plans because it believe that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine will keep Russia busy. The conflict has also forced the US, the main backer of the SDF, to soften its stand on Turkey when it comes to Syria.

Turkey will not negotiate with the SDF. Even Russia doesn’t like the SDF. I think Russia is trying to trade a Turkish operation for a SAA operation in Idlib. This would be an unrealistic demand from Russia because of the refugee problem and the rights of the opposition. It is easier to disarm the HTS than the SDF. Turkey can make the HTS and other oppositions negotiate with Assad and disarm once they reach a settlement. Russia on the other hand cannot make the SDF disarm even if it persuades it to negotiate. How can Turkey accept a negotiated settlement with a PKK/SDF that refuses to disarm? It’s like saying Assad should accept a negotiated settlement with a HTS that refuses to disarm. This isn’t possible.
Russia should demand that Turkey hand over territory liberated from the SDF to the SAA. I think both will agree on this provided Russia prevents that territory from falling back to SDF control.
You only forget here that any belligerent action of the SDF is only a response to aggression of Turkey. In my opinion there was never a problem with Syrian Kurds to become violent, as is the case with so-called Idlib notorious Jihadists. There is a world between these groupings, so they cannot be compared and bargained. Leaders of the world not only have responsibilities for trade but also for morals and righteousness in civilisation. Whether someone likes the ways of SDF or not, they constitute a serious project, whereas Erdogan has no other justification for attacking them than his own brutality and past-time illegal occupations.

The fact remains that SDF cannot be disarmed like Russia persuaded other rebels to disarm. SDF armament is strictly non-negotiable. They will accept any settlement EXCEPT disarmament. But the HTS can be disarmed with proper negotiations if encouraged by Turkey.
Many U.S reports confirm a strong link between the SDF and PKK. The SDF claimed to have severed relations with the PKK in 2003, but U.S sources say SDF leadership are mostly PKK members. Even the U.S doesn’t deny that the SDF’s leaders are from the PKK. This is why Lavrov said recently that he understands Turkey’s security concerns regarding the SDF. And don’t forget that America and the West label the PKK a terrorist organization.
Russia doesn’t give a fuck about the SDF. It only uses SDF to pressure Turkey into concessions on Syria. Once Turkey leaves Syria, Russia will give the SDF two options: Disarmament, or War.

Assad behaved like that because there wasn’t any armed Kurdish group with autonomy. He definitely won’t accept two militaries in Syria, especially when one has a record of working with his enemies.

Assad can accept many things if he has no choice. It’s not only war that is possible in conflicts. If SDF is primarily a civilisatory project then satisfying there needs in this point can be the key for a cooperation agreement which leaves them armament for the time being. Either it is battle and extinction of a brother or it is a slow process of building mutual trust. The latter is certainly the better, as current relations of Europe and Russia show. The Kurds would have to give something in the deal, like some Syrian Access for exploitation, but their so-called protectors US won’t like it. They never like anything that goes for the good. – Turkey just comes in to exploit what can be exploited, that is their primitive multi-lateral strategy.

I disagree with this author. In fact, I’d argue that Putin will welcome such an operation provided Turkey commits to returning liberated SDF territories to the SAA. Turkey has no problem with that.
It is in Russia’s interest that Turkey weakens the SDF. We all know that the SDF won’t give up their autonomy, which means they won’t come under the control of Damascus. At some point, Russia and the SAA will have to fight them even if Turkey doesn’t. This is because the SDF will NEVER disarm like the other rebels did, no matter how hard Russia tries.
Erdogan has dropped any regime-change operation in Syria. It has failed due to America’s back-stabbing. Turkey is more of fighting the U.S in Syria now, not Russia, Iran, or Assad. SDF is America’s biggest interest and Turkey’s biggest threat in Syria. Erdogan has called for the U.S to leave Syria. He wants Syria to maintain its territorial integrity even if it means Assad continuing to rule, provided the SDF is dismantled by the SAA or Russia or America or even Iran.
RUSSIA WON’T PROTECT THE SDF If Russian forces get into a fight with Turkey to protect the SDF, they become Turkey’s biggest national security threat instead of the U.S. But Russia won’t do that due to the following reasons:
First, Russia is in no position to win a war with Turkey in Syria. In fact, it’ll lose everything in the Middle East if such a war were to happen. Secondly, Turkey can “indirectly” bleed Russia in Ukraine by sending arms like Ankinci, TB3, TB2, Kizilelma, 1000km anti-ship missiles, rocket/missile launchers, anti-aircraft units, electronic warfare equipment, etc. Some of these weapons, like the Akinci, carry enough payload to wipe out an entire military base or convoy from 30km away. This will make it extremely difficult for Russia to end the Ukraine war with victory.
Thirdly, Turkey is currently a friendly destination for Russians evading sanctions. It is also one of Putin’s top sources of income as it refuses to join sanctions and continues to import Russian oil. Fourth, a Turkish operation against the SDF will worsen relations between Turkey and the U.S. + Europe. Putin cannot afford any alignment of Turkish and American interests in Syria. He would love to distance Turkey as much as possible from the West. In fact, Putin knows that Turkey hates America. A recent poll showed that Turks believe the U.S is the greatest threat to their national security, not Russia, although Russia is also a threat.
Finally, Putin cannot afford to open another front with Turkey when America is pouring arms and probably fighters into Ukraine. It is far better for Syria to be under Russian control instead of the U.S or Iran’s control. One way to prevent Turkey from going ahead with this operation is for Russia to convince the SDF to disarm. Aside from that, there’s definitely going to be a war again in Northern Syria.

Could Russia take that as an attack by one NATO member on Russia through the military currently stationed in Syria? If they could, would that not allow Russia to strike any part of the whole NATO machine they care to hit. Such as hitting Brussels Command and Control that are issuing all the attack commands that put Russian service personal into the danger-zone.
