It used to be a relatively good military under secular governments, now over 300 senior officers are in jail after the staged “Gulen” coup and many of the officers are promoted on loyalty to Erdogan. The middle class and rich get deferment for their children from military service, so the poor, like in the US end up as cannon fodder. The Turks have been fighting the PKK Kurds for 60 years and have not won a single battle. If Syrians were provided with better arms, they have a very capable battle tested military now that has outfought the Americunts and NATO for 8 years now. If Hezbollah and the Shia militias are also let loose, they can inflict crippling losses on the Turkeys. No Arab state, even Egypt will tolerate a Turkeys occupation of northern Syria on the Zionist SLA model, and we all know how well that ended.

Among the best armies in the world? The Turkish army used to be competent, by Middle Eastern standards. By NATO standards they were decent, but most of its equipment was and still is out of date. That’s why their best tanks, the Leopard 2A4’s light up like christmas trees when they meet ATGW’s, because they haven’t been updated since Turkey got them cheap from Germany in the 90’s. And even then they were already outdated by 90’s standards, that’s why the Germans developed and upgraded theirs to the A6 and A7 marks, with better protection and firepower. To not add additional armor and ATGW defense packages to your tanks when you send them into a country which has been SATURATED by ATGW’s is not exactly a sign of a best army in the world. That puts you on the level of Saudi Arabia, whose tanks also get blown to pieces by insurgents with ATGW’s to spare.
Leadershipwise the Turkish army has suffered tremendously from Erdogan’s purges. Which is what usually happens when you initiate purges. It happened to the Red Army in the late 30’s and the German wehrmacht in 1944. When you replace good officers with politically reliable officers quality and capability take a nose dive. And we’ve seen that too in the poor handling of Turkish troops and tanks in Syria and the over reliance of Syrian Headchoppers as cannonfodder and meatshields.
